Background of the new provisions for seismic assessment of masonry buildings under Urban Renewal Law is presented. First the in-situ material strength values obtained from field tests are summarized. Afterwards, the proposed stiffness approach for modeling walls as equivalent columns is described and results of the validation studies are presented. The proposed seismic assessment approach, described herein, relies on i-conducting linear elastic analysis, ii-estimation of wall strength from three failure modes and iii-comparison of demand capacity ratios with the proposed limits. The out of plane capacity check based on the wall slenderness ratio and axial stress limit are described. The assessment method is validated by using the result of pushover analysis for 10 actual masonry buildings, two of which were tested on site up to near collapse. Based on the analysis results, it was found that the limit for the ratio of shear force of vulnerable walls to the total base shear force can safely be taken as 35%.

New seismic design approaches for block type quay walls
Karakuş, Hülya; Ergin, Ayşen; Department of Civil Engineering (2007)
In this study, new design approaches are introduced for the seismic design of block type quay walls after reviewing the conventional methodologies. Within the development of the new design approaches an inverse triangular dynamic pressures distributions are applied to define both seismic earth pressures and seismic surcharge pressures. Differently from the conventional design methodology, the hydrodynamic forces are taken into consideration while dynamic forces are specified and equivalent unit weight conce...
An approximate procedure for estimating the member demands in mid-rise reinforced concrete buildings
Akpinar, Ugur; Binici, Barış; Yakut, Ahmet; Tuncay, Kağan (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2020-01-01)
Seismic assessment of mid-rise reinforced concrete buildings is important for urban seismic risk reduction. Nonlinear time history analysis is the state-of-the-art analysis tool for this purpose. However, the number of such buildings may reach to several tens of thousands in metropolitan cities of earthquake prone countries. This necessitates faster yet sufficiently accurate assessment methods to mitigate the seismic risk. In this study, a simple and efficient approach is developed and validated for the ass...
Preliminary seismic performance assessment procedure for existing RC buildings
Yakut, Ahmet (2004-08-01)
A preliminary procedure to assess rapidly the likely seismic performance of existing reinforced concrete buildings is presented. In this procedure, a Capacity Index is computed considering the orientation, size and material properties of the components comprising the lateral load resisting structural system. This index is then modified by several coefficients that reflect the quality of workmanship and materials, and architectural features. The procedure has been tested and calibrated based on the data comp...
An improvement to linear-elastic procedures for seismic performance assessment
Gunay, Mehmet Selim; Sucuoğlu, Haluk (Wiley, 2010-07-10)
An improved linear-elastic analysis procedure is developed in this paper as a simple approximate method for displacement-based seismic assessment of the existing buildings. The procedure is mainly based on reducing the stiffness of structural members that are expected to respond in the inelastic range in a single global iteration step. Modal spectral displacement demands are determined from the equal displacement rule. Response predictions obtained from the proposed procedure are evaluated comparatively by ...
THE NONLINEAR RESPONSE OF UNREINFORCED MASONRY BUILDINGS TO EARTHQUAKE EXCITATIONS
TANRIKULU, AK; MENGI, Y; MCNIVEN, HD (1992-11-01)
The three-dimensional non-linear earthquake behaviour of unreinforced masonry buildings is studied by using a constitutive model established experimentally for burned-clay brick masonry wall panels. The parameter functions appearing in the constitutive model are modified so that they accommodate a wall panel made of a general masonry material. In the study it is assumed that the floors of the masonry building are reinforced concrete slabs which are infinitely rigid in their own planes and that the wall pane...
