A Wireless Passive Sensing System for Displacement/Strain Measurement in Reinforced Concrete Members
Ozbey, Burak; ERTÜRK, VAKUR BEHÇET; DEMİR, Hilmi Volkan; ALTINTAŞ, AYHAN; Kurç, Özgür (2016-04-01)
In this study, we show a wireless passive sensing system embedded in a reinforced concrete member successfully being employed for the measurement of relative displacement and strain in a simply supported beam experiment. The system utilizes electromagnetic coupling between the transceiver antenna located outside the beam, and the sensing probes placed on the reinforcing bar (rebar) surface inside the beam. The probes were designed in the form of a nested split-ring resonator, a metamaterial-based structure ...
A Mechanical Frequency Up-Conversion Mechanism for Vibration Based Energy Harvesters
Zorlu, Ozge; Topal, Emre Tan; Külah, Haluk (2009-10-28)
This paper presents a new mechanical frequency up-conversion (FUC) mechanism for harvesting energy from external low frequency vibrations. The structure consists of a magnet placed on a support, a polystyrene cantilever carrying a pick-up coil, and a mechanical barrier which converts low frequency vibrations to a higher frequency, hence increasing the efficiency of the system. The tested structure proved to give 20.3 mV and 68.7 mu W RMS power output by up-converting 10 Hertz external vibration to 643 Hertz...
A compact tubular photobioreactor for outdoor hydrogen production from molasses
KAYAHAN, Emine; Eroglu, Inci; Koku, Harun (2017-01-26)
Hydrogen can be produced sustainably by photofermentation of biomass. For an economically feasible operation, the process should be implemented outdoors using low-cost organic material. In the current study, molasses from a sugar factory was utilized for photofermentative hydrogen production. The experiment was run with Rhodobacter capsulatus YO3 (hup-) in fed-batch mode under outdoor conditions in Ankara between July 12, 2015 and July 24, 2015. The stacked U-tube photobioreactor (9 L) designed for outdoor ...
A Compact Energy Transducer for Power Generation From Respiration
Beyaz, Mustafa Ilker; Habibiabad, Sahar; Yildiz, Hamza; Goreke, Utku; Azgın, Kıvanç (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), 2019-06-01)
This paper reports a compact magnetic transducer developed for generating electrical power from respiration. The device incorporates a side-drive turbine rotor with embedded permanent magnets and two stators, integrated into a poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) package for actuation. The novelty and advantage of the design lies in almost full use of the available turbine volume together with two stators for both mechanical and electrical transduction, which leads to high rotational speeds and high voltage gen...
