Development of Hydropower Sector and Its Impact on Energy-Power Nexus in Central Asia

2017-01-01
This report is the final outcome of a comprehensive desk study and a field research on the environment and energy nexus in Central Asia. This final report seeks to produce recommendations based on experiences and needs of the people of the region, supported by a fieldwork and in cooperation with the partners from inside the region. This report is composed of seven sections. After the first introductory section, the second section summarizes the scope and objective, and the third puts the research question and the methodology. The fourth section gives a summary of the approaches in the literature that assess environment and energy issues, including the nexus approach, and the interrelationship between the nexus and politics and economics. The fifth section outlines the major problems in Central Asia that can be assessed through the lenses of environment-energy nexus. Then, the sixth section explores the main approaches to address these problems on three levels, which are state-level, regional level, and international level. Finally, the seventh section provides a short conclusion and some policy recommendations for the stakeholders.

For almost real-time estimation of the losses after a major earthquake in the Euro-Mediterranean region, the Joint Research Area-3 (JRA-3) component of the European Union (EU) Project "Network of Research Infrastructures for European Seismology -NERIES'' foresees (at several levels of sophistication):
National patterns of research output and priorities in renewable energy
Uzun, A (2002-01-01)
This paper attempts to compare the research Output and priorities of 25 major Countries in renewable energy research. The main objective is to assess the research priorities of the major countries in frontier areas subjects of renewable energy using some bibliometric measures based on renewable energy literature. Subjects of high activity and Subjects of low activity are identified for two time periods ( 1996-1997 and 1998 1999). Our findings, show that the output of publications including articles. reviews...
Integration of solar energy and industrial waste heat into an industrial zone with heat distribution networkand optimization of energy sources for units
Karımı, Sasan; Güvenç Yazıcıoğlu, Almıla; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2019)
In the context of European Union INSHIP (Integrating National Research Agendas on Solar Heat for Industrial Process) project, solar energy and industrial waste heat integration into two food industry Units are simulated and optimized in Izmir, Turkey. Two Units could be connected by a Heat Distribution Network (HDN) to share energy between them. Unit’s thermal systems simulation and energy sources optimization is done by TRNSYS and MATLAB respectively, to use both software capabilities. In each time interva...
Development of openFOAM - WRF coupling methodolgy for wind power production estimations
Leblebici, Engin; Tuncer, İsmail Hakkı (2016-05-02)
The objective of the this study is the development of a tool to predict daily wind energy production potentialaccurately for a region of interest. For that purpose, mesoscale weather prediction model WRF (WeatherResearch and Forecast) is coupled with the Opensource CFD solver OpenFOAM via using low resolutionWRF data as unsteady and spatially varying boundary condtions in the CFD solver OpenFOAM. For thatpurpose, a new boundary condition class (timevaryingmixed) in OpenFOAM was developed and utilized. 12hou...
