Variation of sulphate source regions affecting sulphate concentrations in the Eastern Mediterranean atmosphere
Malkaz, Zeynep; Tuncel, Süleyman Gürdal; Aslan Kılavuz, Seda; Department of Environmental Engineering (2014)
Mediterranean atmosphere, particularly Eastern Mediterranean is one of the most complex air bodies around the world. The region is under strong influence of natural sources located at North Africa and Middle East, and anthropogenic sources located at the north of the basin. Sulphate anomaly is one of the peculiarities of the Eastern Mediterranean atmosphere. SO42- concentrations in aerosol and rain water is among the highest recorded in the Europe and North America. Sulphate concentrations measured by vario...
Variation in labor market participation of married women in Turkey
Hoşgör, Hatice Ayşe (Elsevier BV, 2008-03-01)
We explore the role of paid work in women's empowerment in Turkey by analyzing the variation in employment status and occupational position of Turkish women according to socio-economic and geographic background characteristics, characteristics of their marriage, and gender role attitudes. Being employed is seen as a major instrument in making women less dependent on their families and freeing them from the suppressing influence of patriarchal ideologies. However, only 35% of married women are gainfully empl...
Variation of hardness and modulus across the thickness of Zr-Cu-Al metallic glass ribbons
Melgarejo, Z. Humberto; Jakes, J.E.; Hwang, J.; Kalay, Yunus Eren; Kramer, M.J.; Voyles, P.M.; Stone, D.S. (2013-01-01)
We investigate through-thickness hardness and modulus of Zr50Cu45Al5 metallic glass melt-spun ribbon. Because of their thinness, the ribbons are challenging to measure, so we employ a novel nanoindentation based-method to remove artifacts caused by ribbon flexing and edge effects. Hardness and modulus vary approximately linearly across the thickness but, unlike bulk ingots, the side of the ribbon that cooled most quickly had the highest hardness and modulus. This “inverse” variation may be caused by the fas...
Variation in time-to-compliance for pump-and-treat remediation of mass transfer-limited aquifers with hydraulic conductivity heterogeneity
Gungor-Demirci, Gamze; Aksoy, Ayşegül (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2011-07-01)
In this study, the impact of correlation length (lambda) of hydraulic conductivity (K) heterogeneity on pump-and-treat (P&T) remediation period (time-to-compliance) for a mass transfer-limited aquifer is evaluated. Additionally, impacts of variance (sigma (2)), different distributions of high and low K zones and different initial contaminant masses are explored. Two different P&T policies including different number of wells pumping at different rates are employed for the investigation. Simulation-optimizati...
