Sensitization of the 1.54μm Er emission in Amorphous Silicon Nitride Films
Yerci, Selçuk; Basu, Soumendra N.; Negro, Luca Dal (2009-12-01)
We report on the fabrication, structural and optical properties of Er doped amorphous silicon nitride. The effect of excess Si on the sensitization of the 1.54 mum Er emission will be discussed.
Sensitization of sol-gel derived titania-silica photocatalytic thin films with ascorbic acid
Yılmaz, Emre; Karakaş, Gürkan; Department of Chemical Engineering (2012)
The photocatalytic activity of semiconductor metal oxides can be improved by the addition of sensitizer which enhances the band gap by considerable red shift of the absorption edge of semiconductor. In the present study, the effect of ascorbic acid as sensitizer on the photocatalytic activity of titania-silica binary mixtures was studied. The SiO2-TiO2 mixtures having 50wt%Ti:Si composition were prepared with sol-gel method. The surface area and porosity of the samples were modified by using various amounts...
Susceptibility of mid-rise and high-rise steel moment resisting frame buildings to the nonlinear behavior of beam-column connections
Bayraktar, Murat; Sarıtaş, Afşin; Department of Civil Engineering (2017)
Moment resistinting steel frames provide significant energy dissipation capacity in the event of a major seismic excitation. In order to ensure this, one of the most critical regions to pay attention is the beam-column connections, where their behavior is greatly simplified and idealized for the purpose of design in practice. In this thesis, the variables inherent in steel connections are taken into account through a parametric study by considering both static push-over analysis and nonlinear time history a...

Selective Recognition of Americium by Peptide-Based Reagents
Özçubukçu, Salih; Wegner, Seraphine; Jensen, Mark P.; He, Chuan (American Chemical Society (ACS), 2011-09-05)
The separation of lanthanides from minor actinides such as americium and curium is an important step during the recycling process in the treatment of nuclear waste. However, the similar chemistry and ionic size of lanthanide and actinide ions make the separation challenging. Here, we report that a peptide-based reagent can selectively bind trivalent actinides over trivalent lanthanides by means of introducing soft-donor atoms into a peptide known as a lanthanide-binding tag (LBT). Fluorescence spectroscopy ...
