We present a modern seismological reassessment of the Chios earthquake of 23 July 1949, one of the largest in the Central Aegean Sea. We relocate the event to the basin separating Chios and Lesvos, and confirm a normal faulting mechanism generally comparable to that of the recent Lesvos earthquake located at the Northern end of that basin. The seismic moment obtained from mantle surface waves, M-0=7x10(26) dyn cm, makes it second only to the 1956 Amorgos earthquake. We compile all available macroseismic dat...

On September 28th, 2018, a powerful earthquake (M-w 7.5) struck the Island of Sulawesi in Indonesia. The earthquake was followed by a destructive and deadly tsunami that hit the Bay of Palu. A UNESCO international tsunami survey team responded to the disaster and surveyed 125km of coastline along the Palu Bay up to the earthquake epicentre region. The team performed 78 tsunami runup and inundation height measurements throughout the surveyed coastline. Measured values reached 9.1m for the runup height and 8....
The tsunami of August 17, 1999 in Izmit Bay, Turkey

The Kocaeli 1999 Earthquake with an Mw = 7.4 caused major hazards throughout the NW of Turkey from Tekirdag to Bolu. Historical data indicates that some of the earthquakes around Izmit Bay have caused tsunamis. In this study, tsunami research for the Kocaeli 1999 Earthquake has been made also taking into consideration historical data. In this research more than about 70 data at 35 localities have been used to determine the tsunami evidences in the bay. Coastal observations indicated runups which were rangin...

A magnitude (Mw) 6.6 earthquake occurred on July 20, 2017 (22:31 UTC) in between Bodrum, Turkey and Kos Island, Greece. Field surveys are conducted in the region (Yalciner et al., 2017) including southern and northern coastlines of Bodrum peninsula, Karaada, Akyaka town and Kos Island. A tide gauge located in Bodrum main port recorded the tsunami. The main objectives of these field surveys are to document tsunami effects along the coast, to obtain the available data on the wave height and inundation extent,...
