Water Mass Variability and Levantine Intermediate Water Formation in the Eastern Mediterranean Between 2015 and 2017
Fach Salihoğlu, Bettina Andrea; Örek, Hasan; Salihoglu, Ilkay; Tezcan, Devrim; Latif, Mohammed Abdul; Salihoğlu, Barış (2021-02-01)
The physical characteristics of water masses in the Cilician Basin were analyzed based on recent, comprehensive in-situ data. Nine seasonal cruises from June 2015 to November 2017 were carried out in an area located in the north-eastern Levantine Basin between the coasts of Turkey and Cyprus. In this little studied area, the structure of the water column, its seasonal variability, and water formation events are investigated. The extensive data set reveals that in summer Modified Atlantic Water (MAW) is obse...
CIRCULATION AND HYDROGRAPHY OF THE LEVANTINE BASIN - RESULTS OF POEM COORDINATED EXPERIMENTS 1985-1986
OZSOY, E; HECHT, A; UNLUATA, U (Elsevier BV, 1989-01-01)
A brief review of the meteorological setting, hydrography and the circulation in the Levantine Basin of the Eastern Mediterranean is given. The recent high resolution data obtained in POEM coordinated experiments of 1985–1986 are then used to optimally estimate the circulation in the basin in two different seasons and to describe the water mass distributions. Some of the features observed during the experiments support the historical knowledge on the locations of sub-basin scale gyres and the general circul...
Water level and fish-mediated cascading effects on the microbial community in eutrophic warm shallow lakes: a mesocosm experiment
ÖZEN, ARDA; Bucak, Tuba; Tavsanoglu, Ulku Nihan; Cakiroglu, Ayse Idil; Levi, Eti Ester; Coppens, Jan; Jeppesen, Erik; Beklioğlu, Meryem (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2014-11-01)
Information on the effects of water level changes on microbial planktonic communities in lakes is limited but vital for understanding ecosystem dynamics in Mediterranean lakes subjected to major intra- and inter-annual variations in water level. We performed an in situ mesocosm experiment in an eutrophic Turkish lake at two different depths crossed with presence/absence of fish in order to explore the effects of water level variations and the role of top-down regulation at contrasting depths. Strong effects...
