The role of definitions on classification of solids including (non)prototype examples: The case of cylinder and prism
Işıksal Bostan, Mine (2017-01-01)
The purpose of this study is to investigate prospective middle school mathematics teachers' (PMTs) formal definitions regarding cylinder and prism and the role of these definitions on their classifications of solids involving (non) prototype examples. Data were collected through questionnaire and interview protocol from three PMTs who were 3rd year students in one of the teacher education programs in Turkey. Data analysis revealed that PMTs mostly used inappropriate terminology in defining cylinder and pris...
The role of examples in the formation of concepts in mathematics
Ubuz, Behiye (2000-04-01)
This research presents a brief survey of literature on the use of examples and generic examples in concept formation, and the observation of these theoretical ideas in a number of exam papers. Explanatory insight is given to c1arify the situations in the exam papers. By focusing on the students' answers and the definition given on generic example definition, mainly two suggestions arise for the usage of generic examples. Firstly, the sequence of the exemplification may be in the order of all the generic exa...
THE ROLE OF RANDOM NOISE ON EFFORTS IN GROUP CONTESTS
İNTİŞAH, Merve; Büyükboyacı Hanay, Mürüvvet İlknur; Department of Economics (2022-2)
We theoretically and experimentally study the effect of random noise on effort level in individual and three different types of group contests: perfect-substitutes, best-shot, and weakest-link. Subjects compete for either a high prize value or a low prize value in individual contests. The theoretical model shows that individual effort increases with prize value but decreases with noise variance. Our experiment finds that in individual contests, subjects who compete for a low prize decrease their efforts as ...
The importance of dialogic processes to conceptual development in mathematics
Kazak, Sibel; Wegerif, Rupert; Fujita, Taro (2015-10-01)
We argue that dialogic theory, inspired by the Russian scholar Mikhail Bakhtin, has a distinct contribution to the analysis of the genesis of understanding in the mathematics classroom. We begin by contrasting dialogic theory to other leading theoretical approaches to understanding conceptual development in mathematics influenced by Jean Piaget and Lev Vygotsky. We argue that both Piagetian and Vygotskian traditions in mathematics education overlook important dialogic causal processes enabling or hindering ...
The role of overstrength on the seismic performance of asymmetric-plan structures
Kaatsız, Kaan; Sucuoğlu, Haluk (Wiley, 2019-04-10)
Uneven distribution of seismic demand in asymmetric-plan structures is a critical concern in earthquake-resistant design. Contemporary seismic design strategies that are based on linear elastic response, single load reduction factor, and uniform ductility demand throughout an asymmetric system generally lead to unsatisfactory performance in terms of realized ductilities and nonuniform damage distribution due to strong torsional coupling associated with asymmetric-plan systems. In many cases, actual nonlinea...
