Explicit evaluative comments on Turkish impoliteness Building a model of impoliteness2 on impoliteness1
Işık Güler, Hale (2009-07-02)
Many past politeness theories have been devised “at the expense of ignoring the lay person’s conception of politeness as revealed through their uses of the terms polite and impolite” (Culpeper, 2008, p.19). With the intention of using (im)politeness1 (lay) conceptualisations to inform the (scientific) theorizing of (im)politeness2, this study investigates the conceptualisation of ‘impoliteness’ (Tr. Kaba) for Turkish native speakers (hereafter, TNS). The data for the study comes from a number of sources: a ...
Explicit diversification of search results across multiple dimensions for educational search
Yigit-Sert, Sevgi; Altıngövde, İsmail Sengör; Macdonald, Craig; Ounis, Iadh; ULUSOY, ÖZGÜR (Wiley, 2020-09-01)
Making use of search systems to foster learning is an emerging research trend known assearch as learning. Earlier works identified result diversification as a useful technique to support learning-oriented search, since diversification ensures a comprehensive coverage of various aspects of the queried topic in the result list. Inspired by this finding, first we define a new research problem, multidimensional result diversification, in the context of educational search. We argue that in a search engine for th...
Explicit apologies in L2 Turkish
Hatipoğlu, Çiler (John Benjamins, 2016-01-01)
This study provides quantitative and qualitative analyses of explicit expressions of apology in second language (L2) Turkish. L2 data from native Arabic and Russian speakers are compared with remedial acts used by native Turkish speakers in the same situations. Findings reveal that even after spending a considerable amount of time in the target language community, L2 learners still deviate significantly from native speaker norms and face the risk of encountering communication breakdowns.

Explicit Search Result Diversification Using Score and Rank Aggregation Methods
Ozdemiray, Ahmet Murat; Altıngövde, İsmail Sengör (2015-06-01)
Search result diversification is one of the key techniques to cope with the ambiguous and underspecified information needs of web users. In the last few years, strategies that are based on the explicit knowledge of query aspects emerged as highly effective ways of diversifying search results. Our contributions in this article are two-fold. First, we extensively evaluate the performance of a state-of-the-art explicit diversification strategy and pin-point its potential weaknesses. We propose basic yet novel ...
