Polymerization and polymer characterization of n-vinylcaprolactam
Polat, Özlem; Usanmaz, Ali; Department of Polymer Science and Technology (2005)
In this study, N-vinylcaprolactam was polymerized by radiation in the solid state. The polymerization was carried out at room temperayure under vacuum and open to atmosphere respectively. The polymerization mechanism showed autoacceleration and the rate of polymerization was higher in the presence of oxygen. However the limiting conversion was 100% under vacuum conditions and 90% in the present of oxygen. This is due to the low molecular weight olgomer formation in the presence of oxygen. The polymers were ...

Covalent and non-covalent functionalization of graphene for application in catalysis and device technology: a first principles computational study
Akay, Tuğçe İrfan; Toffoli, Hande; Akata Kurç, Burcu; Department of Micro and Nanotechnology (2017)
In the past few decades, nanomaterials have received increasing attention in various applications such as drug delivery, sensors, hydrogen storage and solar cells. This thesis focuses on the theoretical exploration of pristine and defective graphene in order to highlight the functionalization potential with the use of a wide variety of molecules such as benzene (C6H6), toluene (C7H8), fluorobenzene (C6H5F), benzonitrile (C7H5N) , benzoic acid (C7H6O2), and boron (B) atom. The structures as well as electroni...
Phase transition of chemically synthesized FePt nanoparticles under high pressure
ŞİMŞEK, TELEM; Karci, Ozgur; ÖZCAN, ŞADAN (The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey, 2018-01-01)
We present the results of a study related to phase transformation of chemically synthesized FePt nanoparticles under high pressure from face-centered cubic into face-centered tetragonal structure. As-synthesized nanoparticles are around 4.5 nm and show superparamagnetic behavior at 300 K. After annealing under 60 bar pressure of hydrogen at 400 degrees C for 2 h, nanoparticles exhibit strong ferromagnetic behavior with 5391 Oe coercivity. Results show that high-pressure annealing lowers the decomposition te...
