The effect of the global financial crisis on household income, inequality and poverty in Turkey
Şeker, Sırma Demir; Dayıoğlu Tayfur, Meltem (Orta Doğu Teknik Üniversitesi (Ankara, Turkey), 2016-4)
Using a nationally representative large scale micro data, we investigate the effect of the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) on household income, inequality and poverty in Turkey. In assessing the impact of the GFC, we take 2007 (pre-crisis year) as the benchmark and compare 2009 to 2007 and to 2011 (post-crisis period). We find that (real) household disposable income drops by 3.6 percent from 2007 to 2009, but that the decline in equivalized income is lower at 1.2 percent. Income inequality decreases over...
The Impact of the Extension of Compulsory Schooling on Child Labor in Turkey
Dayıoğlu Tayfur, Meltem (2018-11-30)
Child labor remains a concern in many parts of the developing world. The latest estimates of the ILO suggest that there are 168 million child laborers worldwide, making up 11 percent of the child population (ILO, 2013). There is an extensive literature on child labor that assesses its magnitude, correlates and the impact of various interventions in tackling it (for a review see, Edmonds (2008)). We contribute to this literature by studying how the extensions of compulsory schooling in Turkey in 1997 from 5 ...
The impact of military spending and income inequality on economic growth in Turkey
Tongur, Unal; Elveren, Adem Yavuz (Informa UK Limited, 2016-05-03)
An extensive literature on the effect of military expenditures on economic growth yields conflicting results. However, a crucial issue that has not been investigated in this context is the possible effect of inequality. The impact of military expenditures on economic growth in Turkey has also received substantial attention. Yet, the majority of these studies are not constructed based on a structural model, but rather examine the causality between the variables in question. Considering these two shortcomings...
The Impact of climate change on agricultural production in Mediterranean countries
Atay, Mehmet Ufuk; Sarı, Ramazan; Yücel, İsmail; Department of Earth System Science (2015)
The aim of the study is to determine the impact of climate change on agriculture for Mediterranean countries by employing vulnerability and econometric analysis. At first step, a composite agricultural vulnerability index is created by principal component analysis (PCA) for Mediterranean counties and world’s top 35 cereal producer countries. Then, based on index scores, countries are grouped by cluster analysis. Several indicators are selected from different international databases according to three compon...
The Effects of Compulsory-Schooling Laws on Teenage Marriage and Births in Turkey
KIRDAR, MURAT GÜRAY; Dayıoğlu Tayfur, Meltem; KOÇ, İSMET (2018-12-01)
We estimate the effects of the extension of compulsory schooling from 5 to 8 years in Turkey on marriage and birth outcomes of teenage girls, using a regression discontinuity design. This law increases girls' schooling by roughly 1 year on average, substantially reducing the probability of marriage by age 16 and first birth by age 17. These effects disappear after ages 17 for marriage and 18 for first birth. These results suggest that this law has strong compulsory-attendance effects during the newly mandat...
