A condensed mesozoic succession north of Izmir: A fragment of the anatolide-tauride platform in the Bornova Flysch zone
Okay, Aral I.; Altıner, Demir (2007-01-01)
The Bornova Flysch Zone consists of large blocks of Mesozoic limestone, basalt, serpentinite and radiolarian chert in a highly sheared clastic matrix of latest Cretaceous to Paleocene age. We describe a condensed Mesozoic section from a limestone block near the village of Urbut, 27 km southwest of Bigadic, north of Izmir. The section, 81 m thick, starts with massive, thickly-bedded Upper Triassic carbonates with megalodonts and foraminifera characteristic of Late Norian-Rhaetian. These are unconformably ove...
A 3000 yr history of earthquakes recorded in Hazar Lake potentially related to ruptures along the East Anatolian Fault (Turkey)
Lamair, Laura; Hage, Sophie; Hubert-ferrari, Aurelia; Avşar, Ulaş; El Ouahabi, Meriam; Çağatay, Namık; Boulvain, Frederic (null; 2015-04-19)
In this study, we focus on the paleoseismicity of the East Anatolian Fault (EAF). We investigated Hazar Lake, a pull-apart basin located on the EAF. During the campaign of 2007, short and long cores were taken from the bottom of the lake. Several thin earthquake-triggered sedimentary events (less than 2 cm) were detected in the cores. Radiometric dating (14C, 210Pb, 137Cs) revealed the correlation between the youngest four events and historical earthquakes in 1874-75, 1779-1789, 1513-1514 and 1285. Thin sec...
A Cenomanian-Santonian rudist-bearing carbonate platform on the northern Arabian Plate, Turkey: facies and sequence stratigraphy
Mulayim, Oguz; Yılmaz, İsmail Ömer; Ozer, Sacit; SARI, BİLAL; TASLI, Kemal (Elsevier BV, 2020-06-01)
Recent studies have shown that Cenomanian-Santonian carbonate sedimentary rocks rich in rudists are widespread throughout southeastern Turkey. The Derdere and Karababa formations have been analysed in the Sabunsuyu section (Kilis Province). On a field scale, we can distinguish rudist-rich beds that rhythmically alternate with bioclastic levels composed of bivalves, gastropods and roveacrinids in these formations. Although pelagic faunal elements (predominantly planktic foraminifera and pithonellids) are doc...

A Santonian Campanian boundary locality from North western Turkey
Wolfgring, Eric; Wagreich, Michael; Dinares Turell, Jaume; Yılmaz, İsmail Ömer; Boehm, Katharina (null; 2015-04-17)
A Santonian-Campanian boundary section, close to the village of Göynük in Northwestern Turkey (Bolu province), was recorded and examined in respect to nannofossil and foraminiferal biostratigraphy, magnetic susceptibility, as well as magnetic polarity. During the Late Cretaceous, the Mudurnu-Göynük basin was located in the northern Tethyan Ocean, on the Sakarya continent (between the Intra-Pontide Ocean and northern branch of the Tethys). The section yields reddish hemipelagic to pelagic deposits. The strat...
