Large deformation analysis of laminated composite plates

2012-01-01
The objective of this paper is to investigate the behaviour of laminated fibrereinforced composite plates subject to large deformations by developing a shell finite element and to predict the failure by illustrating the critical elements of the model. The laminates are assumed to be orthotropic and the first order shear deformation theory is applied in the formulation by using triangular shell elements. Laminates under transverse loading were analysed for different boundary conditions and ply orientations. The maximum stress, Hashin's and Tsai-Wu failure criteria are integrated to the code to detect first ply failure. © Civil-Comp Press, 2012.

Large deformation analysis of shells under impulsive loading
Evcim, Mehmet; Darendeliler, Haluk; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2010)
In this thesis large deformation behavior of shell structures under high intensity transient loading conditions is investigated by means of finite element method. For this purpose an explicit finite element program is developed with interactive user interface. The developed program deals with geometric and material nonlinearities which stem from large deformation elastic - plastic behavior. Results of the developed code are compared with the experimental data taken from the literature and simulation results...
Finite element modeling of beams with functionally graded materials
Gürol, Tolga; Sarıtaş, Afşin; Department of Civil Engineering (2014)
In this thesis a new beam element that is based on force formulation is proposed for modeling elastic and inelastic analysis of beams with functionally graded materials. The attempt of producing functionally graded materials (FGM) arose from mixing two materials in such a way that both of them preserve their physical, mechanical and thermal properties most effectively. FGM shows a gradation through the depth from typically a metallic material such as steel or aluminum at one face of the beam’s section depth...
Finite viscoplasticity of amorphous glassy polymers in the logarithmic strain space
Miehe, Christian; Göktepe, Serdar; Mendez Diez, Joel (Elsevier BV, 2009-01-01)
The paper outlines a new constitutive model and experimental results of rate-dependent finite elastic-plastic behavior of amorphous glassy polymers. In contrast to existing kine-matical approaches to finite viscoplasticity of glassy polymers, the formulation proposed is constructed in the logarithmic strain space and related to a six-dimensional plastic metric. Therefore, it a priori avoids difficulties concerning with the uniqueness of a plastic rotation. The constitutive framework consists of three major ...
Buckling, postbuckling and progressive failure anaylses of composite laminated plates under compressive loading
Namdar, Ömer; Darendeliler, Haluk; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2012)
The aim of this thesis is to investigate buckling, post-buckling behaviors and failure characteristics of composite laminated plates under compressive loading with the help of finite element method and experiments. In the finite element analyses, eigen value extraction method is used to determine the critical buckling loads and nonlinear Riks and Newton-Raphson methods are employed to obtain post-buckling behaviors and failure loads. The effects of geometric imperfection amplitude on buckling and post-buckl...
Shallow foundation analysis by smoothed particle hydrodynamics method
Emren, Volkan; Tuncay, Kağan (2021-09-08)
This paper illustrates the use of Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) technique to compute the bearingcapacity of shallow foundations and establish their failure mechanism. SPH is a numerical method based on aLagrangian formulation to solve partial differential equations by discretizing the computational domain with a setof particles that have field variables such as mass, and density. SPH is a meshless method and is not affected bythe particles’ arbitrariness due to its adaptive nature, and it can natura...
