Damage characterization in composite laminates with holes
Erartsın, Ozan; Parnas, Kemal Levend; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2016)
The main objective of this study is to conduct progressive failure analysis (PFA) of quasi-isotropic open-hole tension coupons that exhibit different failure patterns, namely brittle, pull-out, and delamination failure. Effect of delamination, in-situ strengths and degradation trend on failure patterns and loads are also investigated. Explicit finite element method is used for the study. Intra-laminar regions in the finite element model were modeled with 3-D continuum shell elements and interlaminar regions...
DAMAGE RECOVERY IN ELECTRON-IRRADIATED FE-NI-CR ALLOYS
Mehrabov, Amdulla; SHIMOTOMAI, M; DOYAMA, M; IWATA, T; KAWANISHI, T (Elsevier BV, 1985-01-01)
Two martensitic steels (Fe-8.5 Cr-0.9 MoVNb and Fe-9.0 Cr-1.8 MoVNb), one ferritic steel (Fe-17 Cr-1.5 MoVNb), 316 stainless steel and Ni3Fe were irradiated with 2 MeV electrons to . The damage recovery was studied by positron annihilation and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Results suggest that vacancies migrate and disappear below 330 K in the martensitic phase. Vacancies in the ferritic and austenitic phases disappear around 420 K, enhancing the precipitation. Ordered Ni3Fe has three DSC anneali...

Damage Progression in Thick Curved Composite Laminates under Static and Fatigue Loading
Tasdemir, B.; Çöker, Demirkan (IOP Publishing; 2018-06-22)
In this study, damage behavior of curved carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composite laminates that are important sub-structures (ribs, shear webs and spar flanges etc.) for wind turbine blades are investigated under static and fatigue loading conditions. Cross-ply curved specimen consisting of groups of three 0 degrees and 90 degrees layers is used for clear observation of the matrix cracking in thicker plies. Damage mechanisms and locations under static and fatigue loadings are examined. In the exper...
Damage Characterisation in FRP Sandwich Beams using a Wavelet based Multifractal Approach
Dawood, Tariq; Shenoi, Ajit R.; Veres, S. M.; Gunning, M. J.(2004-07-07)
Fibre reinforced plastic (FRP) sandwich composite materials are widely used in the construction of aerospace and marine structures. A cause for concern however in the use of these materials is the fact that internal defects can occur between layers which, if not identified early on, can lead to rapid structural degradation. This paper describes an approach, based on measuring structural vibration characteristics, to identify these internal defects. The idea being that an occurrence of a defect of this natur...
