Under changing climate, the probabilities of hydroclimatological extremes can no more be assumed as stationary. Due to non-stationary climate conditions, we may observe increasing/decreasing trends or a random shift in extreme events. These changes in probabilities may lead to the changes in return periods and return levels of streamflows. In this study, we have studied the impact of non-stationarities on eight sub-basins of upper Euphrates basin. In order to evaluate the impacts of non-stationarities on these stations, stationary and non-stationary forms of GEV (generalized extreme value distribution) and gumbel and normal distribution functions are applied for different return levels of stream flow extremes. Then differences in return levels for both cases (with and without non-stationarity) are analyzed throughout upper Euphrates basin. A non-stationarity impact (NSI) index is formulated to represent the results of non-stationarity analysis on regional scale. Future effects from non-stationarity are also assessed using hydrological modeling for four selected sub-basins. HBV-light was calibrated in semi-distributed form where the sub-basins were divided into different elevation and vegetation zones. Ensemble climate model projections of temperature and precipitation from CORDEX were used as the inputs to simulate the projected flows. It was found that the non-stationarity has important effect on determining the return levels for observed and projected streamflows.

Nonstationary frequency analyses of hydroclimatological extremes over Turkey
Aziz, Rizwan; Yücel, İsmail (2017-04-23)
Under changing climate, the probabilities of hydroclimatological extremes can no more be assumed as constant. We may observe an increasing, decreasing trends or a random shift in extreme events. These changes in probabilities cause changes in return periods and return levels. In this study, we initially applied Mann-Kendall trend test for minimum and maximum temperature extremes for winter and summer to find their significancy throughout 78 stations distributed in Turkey from 1970 to 2015. In order to evalu...
Analysis of teleconnection patterns on climate of Northern Cyprus
Nabango, Hope Nabwire; Akıntuğ, Bertuğ; Sustainable Environment and Energy Systems (2019-9)
The complex interaction of components in the climate system has greatly contributed to uncertainty in climate patterns. Inarguably, anthropogenic factors have relentlessly increased this phenomenon. While innumerable research aimed at forecasting these interactions and their impacts on climate identify three streams of uncertainties as; model responses, external forcing factors and internal atmospheric variability, lack of knowledge on these factors have continue to challenge efficient results pertaining to...
Non-extensive study of rigid and non-rigid rotators
Bagci, GB; Sever, Ramazan; Tezcan, C (World Scientific Pub Co Pte Lt, 2004-05-10)
The isotropic rigid and non-rigid rotators in the framework of Tsallis statistics are studied in the high and low temperature limits. The generalized partition functions, internal energies and heat capacities are calculated. Classical results of the Boltzmann-Gibbs statistics have been recovered as non-extensivity parameter approaches to 1. It has also been observed that non-extensivity parameter q behaves like a scale parameter in the low temperature regime of the rigid rotator model.
Assessment of changes in climate indices of the mediterranean climate region of Turkey
Çetinkaya , İzem; Yücel, İsmail; Department of Civil Engineering (2020-10-28)
As a consequence of climate change, frequency and intensity changes in extreme weather events have occurred. One of the most vulnerable regions of the world that is affected by the climate change is the Mediterranean region. Turkey as a Mediterranean country has a great importance to investigate the changes in climate behavior. 57 stations from Mediterranean climate region of Turkey have been selected as the study area for this thesis. This study aims to assess the climate indices that carry the valua...
Analysis and modeling of spatially and temporally varying meteorological parameter : precipitation over Turkey
Aslantaş Bostan, Pınar; Akyürek, Sevda Zuhal; Heuvelink, Gerrad; Department of Geodetic and Geographical Information Technologies (2013)
As precipitation is the very important parameter of climate and hydrology, exploring spatial and temporal distribution and variation of this variable can give an idea about climate conditions and water resources in the future. Therefore accurate mapping of the temporal, spatial and space-time distributions of precipitation is important for many applications in hydrology, climatology, agronomy, ecology and other environmental sciences. In this thesis, temporal, spatial and space-time distributions and variat...
