Modeling of various biological networks via LCMARS
AYYILDIZ DEMİRCİ, EZGİ; Purutçuoğlu Gazi, Vilda (Elsevier BV, 2018-09-01)
In system biology, the interactions between components such as genes, proteins, can be represented by a network. To understand the molecular mechanism of complex biological systems, construction of their networks plays a crucial role. However, estimation of these biological networks is a challenging problem because of their high dimensional and sparse structures. Several statistical methods are proposed to overcome this issue. The Conic Multivariate Adaptive Regression Splines (CMARS) is one of the recent n...
Modeling of reaction-diffusion transport into a core-shell geometry
King, Clarence C.; Brown, Amelia Ann; Sargın, Irmak; Bratlie, K. M.; Beckman, S. P. (2019-01-01)
Fickian diffusion into a core-shell geometry is modeled. The interior core mimics pancreatic Langerhan islets and the exterior shell acts as inert protection. The consumption of oxygen diffusing into the cells is approximated using Michaelis-Menten kinetics. The problem is transformed to dimensionless units and solved numerically. Two regimes are identified, one that is diffusion limited and the other consumption limited. A regression is fit that describes the concentration at the center of the cells as a f...
Modeling of the activated sludge process by using artificial neural networks with automated architecture screening
MORAL, Hakan; Aksoy, Ayşegül; Golcay, Celal F. (Elsevier BV, 2008-10-17)
In this study, a MATLAB script was developed to aid in the development of artificial neural network (ANN) models by Screening Out the better ANN architectures for the cases studied. Then, the script was applied for modeling of activated sludge process (ASP) for two different cases. In the first one, a hypothetical wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) was considered. The input and Output data for the training of the ANN models were generated using a simulation model, which was an implementation of the Activated...
Modeling of alumina production for identification of solar hybridization paths
Abu Zanouneh, Basil; Tarı, İlker (null; 2019-10-06)
Bauxite to Alumina production processes of Seydisehir Aluminum Plant are investigated based on a previous study detailing the sub-processes and auditing the mass balances of the plant. The details of the balances are used to form a system model using Aspen Pro commercial software package. The mass balances of the system model are used for model validation by comparing them with the literature data. The validated model is used for determining the mass and energy flows together with the flow properties. Based...
Modeling of inelastic behavior of curved members with a mixed formulation beam element
Sarıtaş, Afşin (Elsevier BV, 2009-04-01)
The curved beam element in this paper is based on Hu-Washizu variational principle. The nonlinear response of the element arises from the integration of stress-strain relations over several control sections along the element length. The finite element approximation for the beam uses shape functions for stress resultants that satisfy equilibrium and discontinuous strains along the beam. No approximation for the beam displacement field is necessary in the formulation. The proposed element is free from membran...
