Is Resistance Futile?: The Clash of the Individual and Society in Educating Rita, Billy Elliot and Trainspotting

2012-02-01

Towards precarious politics: assembly, mourning and livable life
Aksan, Hatice Merve; Ecevit, Mehmet Cihan; Department of Gender and Women's Studies (2017)
This thesis aims to interrogate how political subjectivity of the precarious groups is marginalized discursively by the political power, and how this political marginalization becomes the source of both the resistance and the precarity of these communities. Regarding Judith Butler’s framework on precarity, precariousness, and livability throughout the study, precariousness is defined as the required conditions which need to be met in order to sustain the life as a life, and it points out to living socially ...

The glorification of civil society: international debates and Turkish reflections
Arıner, Hakkı Onur; Bedirhanoğlu Toker, Pınar; Department of International Relations (2006)
This thesis aims to problematize the assumptions behind the glorification of civil society as a new and progressive actor in politics along with their political and ideological implications. It is argued that the assumptions behind the glorification of civil society are conceptually misleading and politically disabling. The portrayal of “civil society” or “global civil society” as a homogenous as well as inherently democratic and peaceful sphere that is opposed to an equally homogenous power-seeking state h...
Deleuze and contemporary dystopia
Çokay Nebioğlu, Rahime; Korkut Naykı, Nil; Department of English Literature (2018)
The turn of the new millennium has seen the rise of late capitalism and witnessed a radical change in the structure of the contemporary world, which initiated a new social formation that is seemingly more flexible and liberating yet indeed more controlling. This dissertation looks at contemporary dystopia in the light of these recent changes, arguing that there is now a new moment in the history of dystopia. This new moment suggests that, just like the contemporary world itself, contemporary dystopia has gr...

Şen, Eyüp; Çırakman Deveci, Aslı; Department of Political Science and Public Administration (2019)
Social movements are important actors of social change. Looking at the recent course of social movements, it can be said that the greatest change in the dynamics of social movement and, moreover, the components that make up the movement is related to the organizing practices of the movement.
