Winglet design and analysis for low-altitude solar-powered UAV
Gölcük, Ali Ihsan; Kurtuluş, Dilek Funda (2017-01-01)
One of the most important factors affecting the aerodynamic performance of the aircraft is lift-induced drag caused by wingtip vortices. This study describes the winglet design and analysis for solar-powered unmanned air vehicle (UAV). The motivation of this study is designing elliptical winglet to explore efficient shapes using multiple winglet parameters such as cant angle, sweep angle, taper ratio, toe angle and twist angle. The aim was to investigate the performance of parameters that constitute the win...
Airfoil boundary layer calculations using interactive method and en transition prediction technique
Mersinligil, Mehmet; Özgen, Serkan; Department of Aerospace Engineering (2006)
Boundary layer calculations are performed around an airfoil and its wake. Smith-van Ingen transition prediction method is employed to find the transition from laminar to turbulent flow. First, potential flow around the airfoil is solved with the Hess-Smith panel method. The resulting velocity distribution is input to the boundary layer equations in order to find a so called blowing velocity distribution. The output of the boundary layer equations are also used to compute the location of onset of transition ...
Winglets for wind turbines: an experimental study on aerodynamic performance and tip vortex behavior
Ostovan, Yaşar; Uzol, Oğuz; Department of Aerospace Engineering (2017)
This study experimentally investigated the effects of winglets on power performance and tip vortex behavior of two interacting similar model horizontal axis wind turbines. Power performance of both turbines positioned in-line was measured with and without winglets attached to the blade tips of the upstream turbine. Results showed that power coefficient of upstream turbine increased about 3% operating with winglets around rotor design TSR. Downstream turbine produced less energy while operating in the wake o...

Wing Flexibility Effects in Clap-and-Fling
Perçin, Mustafa; van Oudheusden, B. W.; Remes, B.; Scarano, F. (2011-12-01)
The work explores the use of time-resolved tomographic PIV measurements to study a flapping-wing model, the related vortex generation mechanisms and the effect of wing flexibility on the clap-and-fling movement in particular. An experimental setup is designed and realized in a water tank by use of a single wing model and a mirror plate to simulate the wing interaction that is involved in clap-and-fling motion. The wing model used in the experiments has the same planform with the DelFly II wings and consists...
