Stimulating auditory nerve with MEMS harvesters for fully implantable and self-powered cochlear implants
Beker, Levent; Zorlu, Ozge; Goksu, Nebil; Külah, Haluk (2013-12-01)
This paper presents a novel method for stimulating auditory nerve inside cochlea via a MEMS piezoelectric energy harvester (PEH) implanted on eardrum or ossicles 1 . In this method, the harvester composed of several cantilevers with varying resonance frequencies within the hearing band is utilized. The signals generated by each cantilever of the PEH are used to stimulate the corresponding section of the auditory nerve. The proposed method mimics the natural operation of cochlea, therefore eliminates the use...
Enhancing a human-robot interface using sensory egosphere
Johnson, Carlotta; Koku, Ahmet Buğra; Kawamura, Kazuhiko; Peters, R. Alan (2002-05-15)
This paper presents how a Sensory EgoSphere (SES), a robot-centric geodesic dome that represents the short term memory of a mobile robot, could enhance a human-robot interface. It is proposed that the addition of this visual representation of the sensor data on a mobile robot enhances the effectiveness of a human-robot interface. The SES migrates information presentation to the user from the sensing level to the perception level. The composition of the vision with other sensors on the SES surrounding the ro...
Enhancing the performance of anaerobic digestion of dairy manure through phase-separation
Yılmaz, Vedat; Demirer, Göksel Niyazi; Department of Environmental Engineering (2007)
Anaerobic digestion (AD) is an effective way to convert animal manures into profitable byproducts as well as to reduce the pollution of water, air, and soil caused by these wastes. Conventional high-rate anaerobic reactors cannot effectively process high-solids containing animal manures. The two-phase configuration for AD has several advantages over conventional one-phase processes such as increased stability of the process, smaller and cost efficient process configurations, etc. This study investigated the...

Growing 3D maps from 2D SLAM maps obtained by indoor SLAM with heterogeneous mobile robots
Çetinkaya, Burak; Erkmen, Aydan Müşerref; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2015)
This thesis focuses on growing 3D structure of an indoor environment from 2D maps constructed by Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) algorithm at different height levels explored by heterogeneous vehicles. Vehicles differing mainly in their dynamics explore an indoor environment area using laser scanners at different height levels and creates 2D SLAM maps for each height level based on FastSLAM algorithm. This algorithm utilizes feature based scan matching and natural landmarks. These obtained 2D S...
