A framework to present Bayesian networks to domain experts and potential users

2016-10-05
Knowledge and assumptions behind most Bayesian network models are often not clear to anyone other than their developers. This limits their use as decision support tools in clinical and legal domains where the outcomes of decisions can be critical. We propose a framework for representing knowledge supporting or conflicting with BN, and knowledge associated with factors that are relevant but excluded from the BN. The aim of this framework is to enable domain experts and potential users to browse, review, criticise and modify a BN model without having deep technical knowledge about BNs.Co-authors: Zane Perkins (Queen Mary University of London), Nigel Tai (The Royal London Hospital), William Marsh (Queen Mary University of London)

How Does Software Visualization Contribute to Software Comprehension? A Grounded Theory Approach
Duru, Haci Ali; Çakır, Murat Perit; Isler, Veysi (2013-11-02)
Despite their ability to synthesize vast amounts of information, software visualization tools are not widely adopted in the software engineering industry. In an effort to investigate the underlying reasons, we conducted a usability study to investigate the affordances of software visualization techniques for the maintenance of complex software systems. Expert programmers were asked to carry out programming tasks with or without using a software visualization tool while their screens and eye gaze patterns we...
AN EFFICIENT DATABASE TRANSITIVE CLOSURE ALGORITHM
Toroslu, İsmail Hakkı; HENSCHEN, L (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 1994-05-01)
The integration of logic rules and relational databases has recently emerged as an important technique for developing knowledge management systems. An important class of logic rules utilized by these systems is the so-called transitive closure rules, the processing of which requires the computation of the transitive closure of database relations referenced by these rules. This article presents a new algorithm suitable for computing the transitive closure of very large database relations. This algorithm proc...
A metrics-based approach to the testing process and testability of object-oriented software systems
Yurga, Tolga; Doğru, Ali Hikmet; Department of Information Systems (2009)
This dissertation investigates the factors that affect testability and testing cost of object- oriented software systems. Developing a software program which eases the testing process by increasing testability is crucial. Also, to assess whether or not the testing effort and cost consumed or planned is adequate or not is another critical matter this dissertation aims to answer by composing a new way to evaluate the links between software design parameters and testing effort via source-based metrics. An auto...
A metadata repository model to integrate heterogeneous databases of hardware dependent legacy systems
Tümay, Ahmet; Dinçer, Kivanç; Yürekten, Özgür; Sungur, Müberra; Dikici, Ahmet; Tambaǧ, Yusuf (2006-01-01)
In a large modern enterprise, it is almost inevitable that different parts of an organization use different systems to produce, store, and search their critical data. In addition, the maintenance of heterogeneous database systems is becoming an overhead and a big problem for companies. Meanwhile, it is only achieved by combining the information from these various systems so that the enterprise can use the combined value of the data they contain. One way to solve this problem is to replace the legacy applica...
Using operational data for decision making a feasibility study in rail maintenance
Marsh, William; Nur, Khalid; Yet, Barbaros; Majumdar, Arnab (2016-05-01)
In many organisations, large databases are created as part of the business operation: the promise of ‘big data’ is to extract information from these databases to make smarter decisions. We explore the feasibility of this approach for better decision-making for maintenance, specifically for rail infrastructure. We argue that the data should be used within a Bayesian framework with the aim of inferring the underlying state of the system so we can predict future failures and improve decision-making. Within thi...
