Photocatalytic activity in nano sized titanium dioxide structures
Oymak, Mert Mehmet; Üner, Deniz; Özen, İstem; Department of Chemical Engineering (2012)
The objective of this thesis is to investigate the photocatalytic activity in nanosized TiO2 structures. Two different structures were used for two different reaction systems. In the first part of the study, TiO2 coated on glass beads by a sol-gel procedure were used to test the photocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction with H2O and H2 in the gas phase. The results of photocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction revealed that CO2 reduction step of the overall reaction proceeds in dark; while illumination is required f...
Photocatalytic oxidation of NOX over TiO₂ containing cement based materials
Bayar, İbrahim; Üner, Deniz; Department of Chemical Engineering (2013)
The scope of this thesis was to construct a NOX analysis test system based on ISO-22197:2007(E) standard that can monitor NO oxidation ability of photocatalytically active surfaces. The activity of cement based materials containing TiO2 on photocatalytic oxidation of NOX was observed in this test system. In addition, the experimental validity of the ISO-22197:2007(E) standard was verified. Improvements and modifications are recommended. The method was tested on TiO2 samples coated on the glass, coated on th...
Photocatalytic microbial inactivation over Pd doped SnO2 and TiO2 thin films
ERKAN, Arcan; BAKIR, Ufuk; Karakaş, Gürkan (Elsevier BV, 2006-12-15)
The photocatalytic antimicrobial activity over TiO2, SnO2 and their Pd doped thin film samples were determined against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aereus, Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Aspergilus niger spores. Higher antimicrobial activity was observed with TiO2 than SnO2 thin films and, Pd addition contributes to an increase in the activity of both semiconductor oxides. The highest microbial inactivation was achieved with 1% PdO/TiO2 against E. coli with a 98% decrease in survival after 2 h illuminatio...

Photocatalytic activity of titania–silica mixed oxides prepared with co-hydrolyzation
Bayram, Bilal; Karakaş, Gürkan; Department of Chemical Engineering (2009)
TiO2 in anatase form is the most widely studied material for photocatalytic reactions. Utilization of oxide support materials such as silica with suitable transparency within band gap range of TiO2 is promising technique to obtain efficient photocatalysts for many applications. In the present study, simultaneous co-hydrolyzation of tetraethyl orthosilacate (TEOS) and titanium tetrabutaoxide (TBOT) precursors were carried out in the presence of hydrochloric acid. The effects of washing with low vapor pressur...
