Gear web and rim thickness optimization to improve vibration and fatigue reliability of a rotary UAV gearbox
Taskinoglu, E. E.; Ozturk, V. Y.; Paca, Y. (2012-09-19)
Helicopter structures suffer from excessive vibration originated from many sources including dominant main and tail rotor excitations. Some of these vibration contributors can be identified very easily because of their unique frequency characteristics, such as blade passing frequencies. Additionally, transmission gearboxes are also key sources that show themselves at several gear mesh frequencies. In a gearbox, the transmission error is the phenomena that turn meshing gears into a powerful vibration source ...
Combustion characteristics and kinetics of diesel and canola oil samples
Kök, Mustafa Verşan (2016-01-01)
In this study, combustion and pyrolysis behavior of diesel and canola oil is investigated using thermal analysis techniques known as thermogravimetry (TG-DTG) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) at different heating rates. Reaction regions, peak temperatures, mass loss, heat flow rates, ignition temperatures, and specific heat of diesel and canola oil samples are determined using TG-DTG and DSC data. It was observed that as the heating rate of the reactions increased, peak temperatures of the reacti...

Aircraft vulnerability assessment against fragmentation warhead
Konokman, Huseyin Emrah; Kayran, Altan; KAYA, MUSTAFA (2017-08-01)
This article presents the detailed methodology developed for the vulnerability assessment of the military aircraft against fragmentation warhead. Vulnerability assessment methodology consists of calculation of the dispersion of the fragments, determination of the hit locations, penetration calculations and probability of kill calculations for the aircraft utilizing the fault tree established for the particular aircraft studied. Based on the developed methodology, vulnerability assessment and survivability a...
Fuel-dependent Effects on Droplet Burning and Sooting Behaviors in Microgravity
MANZELLO, Samuel L.; PARK, Seul-Hyun; Yozgatlıgil, Ahmet; Choi, Mun Young (American Chemical Society (ACS), 2009-07-01)
Measurements of soot concentration and soot mass were performed in microgravity conditions for hexane, heptane, nonane, and decane droplets burning in air at the NASA Glenn Research Center (GRC) 2.2 s drop tower in Cleveland, OH. Experiments performed in air at 75.9 and 101.3 kPa indicate that the maximum soot Volume fractions and soot mass are similar, to within experimental uncertainty, for all of the fuels tested. The flame standoff ratios (FSR) did not vary significantly for the fuels considered. The so...
