Experimental and computational study of scalar modes in a periodic laminar flow
Başkan Perçin, Özge; Metcalfe, Guy; Clercx, Herman J. H. (2015-10-01)
Scalar fields can evolve complex coherent structures under the action of periodic laminar flows. This comes about from the competition between chaotic advection working to create structure at ever finer length scales and diffusion working to eliminate fine scale structure. Recently analysis of this competition in terms of spectra of eigenfunctions of the advection diffusion equation (ADE) has proven fruitful because these spectra contain both fundamental information about how mixing processes create emergen...
Experimental and numerical investigation of mechanical properties of additively manufactured auxetic structures
Taşdemir, Mehmet; Evis, Zafer; Department of Engineering Sciences (2022-8)
In this thesis, two novel unit cell designs were constituted by combining different auxetic structures in literature, and they were produced via the 3D printers, which is one of the most popular additive manufacturing methods nowadays. Based on the unit cells produced with various parameters, tensile and compression samples were manufactured and the mechanical properties of auxetic structures and their feasibility in the field of additive manufacturing were investigated. Although polymer-based materials are...
Experimental and Computational Investigation of Vortex Formation in a Vertical Intake Structure
Aydın, İsmail; Köken, Mete (2013-09-13)
Vortex formation in the head pond of a hydroelectric power plant has been studied experimentally in a scaled hydraulic model. Velocity vector field and the turbulent kinetic energy distributions were measured using an Acoustic Doppler Velocimetry (ADV). Free surface flow in the head pond was also simulated using Flow-3D software. Comparison of measured and computed flow variables were satisfactorily good, promising the use of CFD tool to identify surface vortex and calculate its strength from the numerical ...
Experimental and computational investigation of crack growth along curved interfaces
Yavaş, Denizhan; Çöker, Demirkan; Department of Aerospace Engineering (2013)
In this study, crack growth along curved weak interfaces is investigated experimentally and computationally. First, delamination of curved composite laminates subjected to axial load is studied computationally. Delamination in curved laminates is modeled using explicit finite element analysis in conjunction with cohesive zone method. It is observed that delamination is highly dynamic and that as the initial crack grows, the crack tip speed reaches the Rayleigh wave speed of the composite material with incre...
Experimental and modelling study on nonlinear time-dependent behaviour of thin spray-on liner
Güner, Doğukan; Öztürk, Hasan (Elsevier BV, 2019-02-01)
Thin spray-on liners (TSLs) are fast-setting multi component polymeric materials applied on rock or coal surface with a thickness of 2-5 mm that have fairly high tensile strength, adhesion, and elongation capabilities. Compared to conventional surface support elements, TSLs with polymer content exhibit different material responses over time. As a matter of fact, the creep behaviour of TSLs under a constant load has a significance for the evaluation of the long term performances of TSLs. This paper investiga...
