A Mean Field Model for the Coexistence of Nematic, Smectic A and Smectic C phases in Liquid Crystals

1998-12-01
We present here a mean field model for the nematic-smectic A-smectic C coexistence of a liquid crystal near the NAC point which is a multicritical point. The critical exponents calculated from our model are tricritical expoenents for the order parameters, susceptibility and the specific heat. Our results show that if the NAC point is the tricritical point, then our mean field model describes adequately the liquid crystalline system in the coexistence region of the nematic-smectic A-smectic C phases.

A computational framework of configurational-force-driven brittle fracture based on incremental energy minimization
MIEHE, CHRISTIAN; Gürses, Ercan; BIRKLE, MANUEL (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2007-06-01)
A variational formulation of quasi-static brittle fracture in elastic solids at small strains is proposed and an associated finite element implementation is presented. On the theoretical side, a consistent thermodynamic framework for brittle crack propagation is outlined. It is shown that both the elastic equilibrium response as well as the local crack evolution follow in a natural format by exploitation of a global Clausius-Planck inequality. Here, the canonical direction of the crack propagation associate...
A perturbative treatment for the bound states of the Hellmann potential
Ikhdair, Sameer M.; Sever, Ramazan (Elsevier BV, 2007-05-14)
A new approximation formalism is applied to study the bound states of the Hellmann potential, which represents the superposition of the attractive Coulomb potential -a/r and the Yukawa potential bexp(-delta r)/r of arbitrary strength h and screening parameter delta. Although the analytic expressions for the energy eigenvalues E(n,l) yield quite accurate results for a wide range of n, f in the limit of very weak screening, the results become gradually worse as the strength b and the screening coefficient 6 i...
A mean-field model for the phase diagram of liquid crystals
Tublek, A; Yurtseven, Hasan Hamit; Salihoglu, S (Informa UK Limited, 1998-01-01)
In this study we have developed a mean-field model to obtain the phase diagram for a mixture of liquid crystals. Our mean-field model gives the phase diagram of the nematic, smectic A and smectic C phases near the NAC point. We have fitted our model to the experimentally observed data. From this fitting, we conclude that our mean-field model explains correctly the experimentally observed behavior of a mixed liquid crystalline system near the NAC point.
A phase diagram near the NAC* point in liquid crystals
Salihoglu, S; Tublek, A; Yurtseven, Hasan Hamit (Informa UK Limited, 2000-01-01)
Wt study here a mean field model to obtain the phase diagram (concentration versus temperature) near the NAC* point in a binary mixture of liquid crystal. Wr have Fitted our phase line equations to the experimental data for the mixture of SCE9 + SCE10 liquid crystals. We deduce fi om our analysis that there should exist a tricritical point close to the NAC* point on the AC* phase line.
A gauge model of amorphous solids containing defects
Dereli, Tekin; Vercin, Abdullah (Informa UK Limited, 1987-11)
A gauge model of amorphous solids is formulated as a theory of connection in the orthonormal-frame bundle over the body manifold with the structure group SO(3). The construction of free-energy integrals and the properties of maximally symmetric configurations are discussed.
