In this study, use of foundry sand with some additives as a landfill cap layer material is examined. For this purpose, laboratory tests were performed with these samples: Foundry sand (For two different type of foundry sand: Green sand and Resin Bonded Sand), Foundry sand+ Bentonite (various proportions), Foundry Sand+Bentonite+Waste Rubber (Pulverized Rubber and Strip Rubber). Samples were compacted to their 95 % of o.m.c and dry density. The index properties, permeability k, split tensile strength, direct shear tests were carried out. It was found that increasing bentonite content (9 %) decreased the hydraulic conductivity below the requirements (1x10-9 m/s) for all foundry sand. Adding rubber (3%) to foundry sand bentonite mixture, increases the split tensile strength for all types of samples, but it also increased permeabilities. The results showed that green foundry sand with bentonite and waste rubber can be used as a landfill cap layer material.

Use of foundry sand as a landfill cap layer material
Akkaya, Utku; Çokça, Erdal; Department of Civil Engineering (2015)
A foundry is a kind of manufacture that generates metal castings by pouring molten metal into a preformed mold to yield the resulting hardened cast. Foundries buy specific and high quality silica sands which shape the outer form of mold cavity in casting and molding operations. These sands normally mixed with a small amount of bentonite in order to act as a binder material Landfill capping is a kind of containment technology that is kind of barrier between the contaminated media and the surface. Cap perform...
Tarımsal atıklardan elde edilen hemiselüloz temelli biyopolimerlerden ekstrüzyon vasıtası ile filmlerin üretilmesi
Bölükbaşı, Ufuk; Özkan, Necati; Bahçegül, Erinç; Akınalan, Büşra; Erdemir, Duygu(2014)
Majority of materials used in daily life are produced by using petroleum based polymers. However sustainability of such production processes is problematic when it is considered that petroleum is not a renewable resource in addition to the environmental pollution caused by petroleum based products. Currently, biopolymers are more frequently utilized as an alternative to petroleum based polymers. Due to their low cost because of the waste status and abundance, lignocellulosic agricultural wastes are among th...
Assessment of porosity-permeability variation on the response of sandy soils via hypoplasticity model
Bayraktaroğlu, Hilmi.; Huvaj Sarıhan, Nejan; Department of Civil Engineering (2019)
Hydro-mechanical characteristic of the saturated sands is highly influenced by their porosity and permeability. During loading, unloading and reloading compaction of sands, loosening and re-compaction take place, which leads to changes in pore volume and permeability. In order to accurately simulate these real-life conditions, new variables and phenomena should be investigated using sophisticated numerical tools and equipment. In this study, the behavior of water saturated sands subjected to cyclic and dyna...
Synthesis and characterization of waterborne and phosphorus containing flame-retardant polyurethane coatings
Çelebi, Funda; Aras, Leyla; Gündüz, Güngör; Department of Chemistry (2002)
In this study, phosphorus containing flame retardant water-dispersed polyurethane paints were produced by incorporating different amounts of phosphorus compound onto the polyurethane main chain. The novel flame retardant compound was synthesized in three steps. In the first step, monobenzalpentaerythritol was produced from benzaldehyde and pentaerythritol. In the second step, phosphorylation of monobenzal pentaerythritol was performed. Final step includes the formation of phosphorus phenyl dihydroxyl from t...
Effect of soft fine particles on the kinetics and energetics of grinding hard coarse particles
Yılmaz, Selim; Hoşten, Çetin; Department of Mining Engineering (2016)
The main objective of this study is to investigate breakage parameters of a narrow size fraction of coarse particles of a hard mineral when ground in a mixture with fine particles of a soft mineral. For this purpose, quartz and calcite were selected as mixture components varying appreciably in hardness (quartz mohs scale:7 and calcite mohs scale:3) but having quite similar densities. Mixture feeds comprised of -1.18+0.85 mm quartz (hard and coarse) and -106 µm calcite (soft and fine) at various proportions ...
