Modeling of newtonian fluids and cuttings transport analysis in high inclination wellbores with pipe rotation
Sorgun, Mehmet; Parlaktuna, Mahmut; Aydın, İsmail; Department of Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering (2010)
This study aims to investigate hydraulics and the flow characteristics of drilling fluids inside annulus and to understand the mechanism of cuttings transport in horizontal and deviated wellbores. For this purpose, initially, extensive experimental studies have been conducted at Middle East Technical University, Petroleum & Natural Gas Engineering Flow Loop using water and numerous drilling fluids for hole inclinations from horizontal to 60 degrees, flow velocities from 0.64 m/s to 3.05 m/s, rate of penetra...
Ride comfort improvement by application of tuned mass dampers and lever type vibration isolators
Aydan, Göksu; Ciğeroğlu, Ender; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2010)
In this study, the efficiency of linear and rotational tuned mass dampers (TMD) and lever type vibration isolators (LVI) in improving ride comfort is investigated based on a vehicle quarter-car model. TMDs reduce vibration levels by absorbing the energy of the system, especially at their natural frequencies. Both types of TMDs are investigated in the first part of this study. Although linear TMDs can be implemented more easily on suspension systems, rotational TMDs show better performance in reducing vibrat...
Computation of drag force on single and close-following vehicles
Örselli, Erdem; Çetinkaya, Tahsin Ali; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2006)
In this study, application of computational fluid dynamics to ground vehicle aerodynamics was investigated. Two types of vehicle models namely, Ahmed Body and MIRA Notchback Body and their scaled models were used. A commercial software "Fluent" was used and the effects of implementing different turbulence models with wall functions were observed. As a result, an appropriate turbulence model was selected to use in the study. The drag forces, surface pressure distributions and wake formations were investigate...
Experimental investigation of flow characteristics of flexible wings with different stiffener orientations in linear translating motion
Karakaş, Hasan Halil; Perçin, Mustafa; Department of Aerospace Engineering (2022-8-12)
This study experimentally investigates the flow field around the wings, which first accelerate with constant acceleration from the rest and then perform a linear translating motion with constant velocity. Four wings, which are 3D-printed, with a bending stiffness in different directions are examined. The difference in bending stiffness values is achieved by placing stiffeners having different angles with the leading edge on the upper surface of the wing. The stiffeners are printed with wings to obtain well-...
Failure analysis in adhesively bonded composite joints
Atay, Reyhan Deniz; Güvenç Yazıcıoğlu, Almıla; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2019)
In this study, swing up and stabilization of on/off type of cold gas thruster driven inverted pendulum is accomplished. First, pulse width modulator (PWM) design method is generated to obtain quasi-linear thrust output from on/off type of thruster. Than, single axis angle controller is designed. Designed angle controller and PWM scheme are tested and verified on single axis angle control test setup. Finally, an other freedom is attached to single axis test setup and rotary inverted pendulum (Furuta Pendulum...
