PRODUCTION OF PRECIPITATED CALCIUM CARBONATE FROM MARBLE WASTE BY CALCINATION-HYDRATION-CARBONATION
Baydar, Hazal Melis; Arol, Ali İhsan; Department of Mining Engineering (2022-2)
Precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) is used as a filler and extender in many different industries, particularly in paint, paper, plastic, adhesive, and sealant. Today, high purity limestone is preferred as a raw material for PCC production. In this study, it is aimed to use marble waste as an alternative raw material, which has nearly the same chemical composition as limestone. In this regard, the possibility of recycling the marble waste to produce PCC, a product with added value, was investigated. In the...
Extraction of polylactic acid degradation products with supercritical carbon dioxide
Koçak Bütüner, Sümeyye; Dilek Hacıhabiboğlu, Çerağ; Sezgi, Naime Aslı; Department of Chemical Engineering (2022-11-25)
Polylactic acid (PLA) is a bio-based polyester derived from starch feedstocks such as sugar cane, sugar beet, or corn. PLA is used in industries like the medical sector, fibers and textiles, packaging, and agriculture. Since the PLA usage area is increasing, its recyclability has gained importance. Currently, chemical recycling for PLA has been conducted by pyrolysis, alcoholysis, or hydrolysis. In this research, an environmentally benign separation method was developed to recover the PLA depolymerization p...
Production of fly ash-magnesium phosphate cements
Bilginer, Baki Aykut; Erdoğan, Sinan Turhan (null; 2019-05-02)
Synthesis and applications of ion incorporated amorphous calcium-magnesium carbonate
Göçtü, Yağmur; Ercan, Batur; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2023-1-18)
Amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC) can be synthesized using co-precipitation technique and different ions can typically be incorporated into its amorphous structure to enhance its stability. Although ACC was investigated for various applications, its antibacterial properties have not been explored. In this thesis, two different types of magnesium stabilized amorphous calcium carbonate (ACMC) nanoparticles were synthesized for antibacterial applications. In the first part selenite ions, and in the secon...
Properties of reactive magnesia-incorporated cements
Ardoğa, Mehmet Kemal; Yaman, İsmail Özgür; Department of Civil Engineering (2022-2)
Magnesium oxide (MgO) has limited use in civil engineering applications. The presence of MgO (especially in free form) in portland cements is limited by the standards due to the risk involved in the gradual hydration of MgO that may lead to disruptive expansions after the cementitious system hardens. However, it is possible to overcome this detrimental effect by calcining magnesite at lower temperatures than that is encountered in the cement kilns and use thus obtained reactive MgO as an additive in cement....
