Epoxy-based composites and coatings: improvement of multifunctional properties
Çaldıklıoğlu, Almira; Bayram, Göknur; Department of Chemical Engineering (2019)
The purposes of this study are to improve mechanical properties, thermal stability, resistance to flammability, electrical conductivity and hydrophobicity of epoxy (E) by incorporation of expanded graphite (EG) and titanium dioxide (T) particles. In this study, sonication with the use of solvent method was primarily determined for the epoxy-based binary composite and coating preparation. By this method, the epoxy composites and coatings were produced by changing EG concentration as 0.05, 0.1, 0.25, 0.5, 0.7...

Epoxidation of Ethylene by Silver Oxide (Ag2O) Cluster: A Density Functional Theory Study
Fellah, Mehmet Ferdi; van Santen, Rutger A.; Önal, Işık (2011-06-01)
Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were employed to study epoxidation of ethylene on a [Ag14O9] cluster model representing silver oxide (001) surface. Theoretical results obtained in this study showed that formation paths of acetaldehyde and vinyl alcohol have higher activation barriers than that of ethylene oxide formation path on silver oxide (35 and 35 vs. 20 kcal/mol). Formation of the ethylene oxometallocycle intermediate is found to have a low probability on Ag2O(001) surface. The essential ...
Epoxidation reactions of small alkenes on catalytic surfaces
Kurnaz, Emine; Önal, Işık; Department of Chemical Engineering (2011)
Propylene epoxidation reaction was investigated on catalytic surfaces of chlorinated copper(I) oxide and ruthenium(IV) oxide using periodic density functional theory (DFT). Cu2O(001) and (110) surface of RuO2 was selected to generate chlorinated surfaces to be used in the study. Besides epoxidation, other reactions that compete with epoxidation were also studied such as formations of allyl-radical, acrolein, acetone on chlorinated Cu2O(001) and formations of propionaldehyde, allyl-radical and acetone on chl...
Oligomeric ethylene glycols as sorting tags for parallel and combinatorial mixture synthesis
Wilcox, CS; Türkyılmaz, Serhan (Elsevier BV, 2005-03-14)
Sorting tags for chromatography allow mixtures of substrates to be carried through parallel chemical processes and then separated. The first sorting tags were fluorocarbons. An enabling characteristic of fluorous sorting tags is the predictable incremental increase in retention time with increasing fluorocarbon chain length. Here we describe a general approach to sorting tags and report our discovery of a second class of chromatographic tags. The new tags are oligomeric ethylene glycol (OEG) derivatives.
