The choice of proposal distribution in the particle filter is one of the most important design choices, and also one of the trickiest one to implement. There are basically three main options: the prior, the likelihood and the optimal proposal that combines the prior and the likelihood. The optimal proposal however, can not be obtained in most cases. The prior proposal is although easy to implement, it does not incorporate the information available otherwise from the recent observation. The prior may thus work fine for low signal to noise ratio (SNR), where the recent observation does not carry much information. However, defining the critical value of the SNR is not that obvious. On the other hand, the likelihood as a proposal always includes the information from the recent observation, but it requires that the measurement dimension is at least equal to the state dimension. We here formalize the problem, and point out an approach based on down-sampling the model. One main advantage of down-sampling is that it can decrease the problem of particle degeneracy. © 2011 IEEE.

Reducing computational demand of multi-state constraint kalman filter in visual-inertial odometry applications
Eyice, Kerem; Çiloğlu, Tolga; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2019)
The aim of this study is to reduce the computational load required by Multi-State Constraint Kalman Filter in visual-inertial odometry applications while maintaining the accuracy of the localization solution. In order to accomplish this, a keyframe-based pose selection mechanism is proposed. The proposed method fuses visual measurements with inertial measurements in order to estimate the kinematics of the platform. The contribution of this study is to reduce computational demand of the filtering operations ...
Generating positive bounding boxes for balanced training of object detectors
Oksuz, Kemal; Cam, Baris Can; Akbaş, Emre; Kalkan, Sinan (2020-03-01)
© 2020 IEEE.Two-stage deep object detectors generate a set of regions-of-interest (RoIs) in the first stage, then, in the second stage, identify objects among the proposed RoIs that sufficiently overlap with a ground truth (GT) box. The second stage is known to suffer from a bias towards RoIs that have low intersection-over-union (IoU) with the associated GT boxes. To address this issue, we first propose a sampling method to generate bounding boxes (BB) that overlap with a given reference box more than a gi...
THE GENERALIZED H-LATTICE FILTER AND ESTIMATION OF THE ARMA MODELS
YARMANVURAL, F; WAWRZYNSKI, D; CETIN, AE (1989-01-01)
A class of lattice filters, the generalized H-lattice filters is introduced. The generalized H-lattice filters can represent the autoregressive moving-average (ARMA) models and they can be used for the modeling and analysis of the ARMA stochastic process.
THE EFFECTS OF HAMMER-ROD ALIGNMENT AND ROD LENGTH ON SPT HAMMER EFFICIENCY
Çevik, Mustafa Efekan; Çetin, Kemal Önder; Department of Civil Engineering (2021-12-6)
The Standard Penetration Test (SPT) is the most widely used in-situ dynamic penetration test to identify the geotechnical properties of mostly cohesionless soils for over 100 years. Although ASTM defines the procedure of the SPT, the test itself has special variabilities due to many uncertainties. It can be seen that, with different equipment and operator, one can obtain significantly different SPT-N values that belong to the same soil profile. To minimize this difference, some correction factors are ...
Probabilistic modeling of operational dynamic water balance system for a mining facility
Pelenk, Ümit Giray; Yılmaz, Koray K.; Department of Geological Engineering (2019)
Water management in any environment is quite difficult and complex not only because of the effort that is required to comply with the environmental regulations but also due to the dynamic nature of the system not well suited for the deterministic approaches. As a result, probabilistic approaches are developed to make decisions that can actually represent the uncertainties quantitatively as probability distributions. Such methods, considered to be the best practice in mining industry, are very useful to make...
