Nanopatterned tubular collagen scaffolds for vascular tissue engineering
Zorlutuna, Pınar; Hasırcı, Vasıf Nejat; Department of Biotechnology (2009)
One of the major causes of death in developed countries is cardiovascular disease that affects small and medium sized blood vessels. In most cases autologous grafts have to be used which have limited availability. A functional tissue engineered vessel can be the ultimate solution for vascular reconstruction. Tissue engineered constructs with cells growing in an organized manner have been shown to have improved mechanical properties. In the present study collagen scaffolds with 650 nm, 500 nm and 332.5 nm wi...
Nanopatterned collagen tubes for vascular tissue engineering
Zorlutuna, P.; Hasırcı, Nesrin; Hasırcı, Vasıf Nejat (2008-08-01)
Nanopatterned (330 nm wide channels) type I collagen films were prepared by solvent casting on poly(dimethyl siloxane) (PDMS) templates. These films were rolled into tubular constructs and crosslinked. Tubular constructs were incubated under cell culture conditions for 28 days and examined by stereomicroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) for the integrity of the structure. The nanopatterned films were also seeded with human vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) and examined after immunostaining wit...
Nanofeatured silk fibroin membranes for dermal wound healing applications
Karahaliloglu, Zeynep; Ercan, Batur; DENKBAŞ, EMİR BAKİ; Webster, Thomas J. (2015-01-01)
As an effort to create the next generation of improved skin graft materials, in this study, we modified the surfaces of a previously investigated material, silk fibroin, using a NaOH alkaline treatment to obtain a biologically inspired nanofeatured surface morphology. Such surfaces were characterized for roughness, energy, and chemistry. In addition, keratinocyte (skin-forming cells) adhesion and proliferation on such nanofeatured silk fibroin wound dressings were studied in an initial attempt to determine ...
Nanowire-based multifunctional antireflection coatings for solar cells
Hiralal, Pritesh; Chien, Chihtao; Lal, Niraj N.; Abeygunasekara, Waranatha; Kumar, Abhishek; Butt, Haider; Zhou, Hang; Ünalan, Hüsnü Emrah; Baumberg, Jeremy J.; Amaratunga, Gehan A. J. (2014-01-01)
Organic (P3HT/PCBM) solar cells are coated with ZnO nanowires as antireflection coatings and show up to 36% enhancement in efficiency. The improvement is ascribed to an effective refractive index which results in Fabry-Perot absorption bands which match the polymer band-gap. The effect is particularly pronounced at high light incidence angles. Simultaneously, the coating is used as a UV-barrier, demonstrating a 50% reduction in the rate of degradation of the polymers under accelerated lifetime testing. The ...
Nanolayered metallic glass-crystalline composites with high strength and wear resistance
Özerinç, Sezer (null; 2020-02-23)
Nanolayered metallic glass-crystalline composites are promising materials that combine the high strength of metallic glasses with the superior ductility of crystalline metals. Previous work has focused on metallic glass-FCC crystalline nanolayers, and showed that the strength follows the Hall-Petch behavior of increasing strength with decreasing layer thickness. In our work, we investigated metallic glass-HCP crystalline nanolayers. Interestingly, the strength of these layers does not show any size effect; ...
