The objective of this study is to introduce the risk management system which is a relatively new concept for the Turkish construction industry and to emphasize the possible advantages that could be derived by the application of risk management techniques within the various stages of a construction project. Furthermore, some proposals for the successful management of construction projects are presented in case that the current contracting system has to be continued which creates the main bottleneck that discourage the frequent implementation of risk analysis techniques. Within this context, by focusing on Monte Carlo Simulation technique that constitutes an important part of the risk management system, cost prediction analysis of a lump-sum construction project has been realized by taking into consideration the previous cost records and expert opinions. Findings of the analysis reveal that risk analysis provides much more information to tenderers paving way to the achievement of more realistic decisions as compared to conventional analysis.

Identification and modeling of critical success factors of portfolio management in construction sector
Hızal, A. Sercenk; Sönmez, Rifat; Department of Civil Engineering (2019)
Project Portfolio Management (PPM) is a good theoretical fit for a multi-dimensional industry like construction, however practical implications are limited. The aim of this thesis is to deeply analyze and investigate the determinant factors on the success of portfolio management in the construction industry. Since few studies have addressed them, both PPM in the construction sector and related success factors could be regarded as newly arising subjects for the literature. Consequently, the main contribution...
Development of a lessons learned management process model and a web-based tool for construction companies
Eken, Görkem; Birgönül, Mustafa Talat; Dikmen Toker, İrem; Department of Civil Engineering (2017)
Organizational memory formation and its effective utilization is a source of competitive advantage especially in project-based industries such as construction industry as it may eliminate potential problems in projects leading to higher profitability and less errors. However, project-based nature also poses challenges for establishing organizational memory as it is hard to capture knowledge of temporary project teams and transfer different types of knowledge between projects. This study presents a “Lessons ...
Integrated river basin management : a case of Büyük Menderes river basin
Özonat, Çiğdem; Yetişkul Şenbil, Emine; Department of City and Regional Planning (2013)
The aim of the thesis is to examine the Integrated River Basin Management (IRBM) Planning approach and to evaluate the applicability of this approach in Turkey in terms of planning tools as well as legal and institutional aspects. As a particularly suitable form of implementation of Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM) paradigm, IRBM is recognized as the most appropriate tool in the international arena for sustainable use of water resources through the integration of water planning and management wit...
Using Post-Project Reviews for Risk Assessment of Construction Projects
Shokouhi, Pegah; Birgönül, Mustafa Talat; Dikmen Toker, İrem; Department of Civil Engineering (2022-8-26)
Risk management (RM) is about identifying risk factors, analyzing their impacts on project success, and developing management strategies to mitigate them. Learning from previous projects to make better predictions in forthcoming projects is critical for the success of RM activities. Many construction companies conduct post-project reviews (PPRs) to record lessons learned (LL) from projects. However, if these reports do not contain the necessary risk-related information and are not prepared and stored ...
Analogical reasoning for risk assessment and cost overrun estimation in construction projects
Çelenligil, Onur; Dikmen Toker, İrem; Birgönül, Mustafa Talat; Department of Civil Engineering (2010)
Project cost increase is the main concern in international construction projects which usually results in disputes and conflicts among the project participants. The aim of this thesis is to construct a database that represents risk event history regarding international construction projects and construct a cost overrun prediction model. It is hypothesized that magnitudes of project related, company related and country related risk factors can be predicted by assessing the level of vulnerability by analogica...
