3 D time accurate CFD simulations of wind turbine rotor flow fields
Tonkal, Ozan Çağrı; Pehlivan, Sercan; Sezer Uzol, Nilay; İşler, Veysi (American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Inc.(AIAA); 2006-01-12)
This paper presents the results of three-dimensional and time-accurate Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations of the flow field around the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) Phase VI horizontal axis wind turbine rotor. The 3-D, unsteady, parallel, finite volume flow solver, PUMA2, is used for the simulations. The solutions are obtained using unstructured moving grids rotating with the turbine blades. Three different flow cases with different wind speeds and wind yaw angles are investigated:...
3 D Simulation of Convection in Asymmetrically Heated Turbine Blade Cooling Channels
Tarı, İlker (null; 2000-08-18)
One of the important challenges in gas turbine design is the cooling of the turbine blades due to high operating temperatures. A common approach to this problem is circulating a coolant or cool air in channels bored on the turbine blades. Usually, it is very difficult to perform experiments to obtain information about flow conditions and properties in these channels. I used a home-brewed 3-D spectral methods code to simulate the fluid flow in inclined coolant channels driven by natural as well as forced con...
3-dimensional measurements of morphological properties of particles
Hicyilmaz, C; Bilgen, S (1996-09-26)
Morphological properties of particles are important in mineral processing. Flotation recoveries are affected by surface roughness and acuteness of particles. A novel technique was developed to measure the morphological properties of particles 3- dimensionally. Pyrite sample ground in autogeneous and ball mill to differentiate the surface properties was used in this study.
3-D model for the analysis of rectangular machine foundations on a soil layer
Aşık, Mehmet Zülfü (1997-07-04)
In order to analyze the rectangular machine foundations subjected to a vertical harmonic force, a simple mathematical model based on variational principle is developed. A surface footing is resting on a layer of soil deposit with a non-compliant rock or rock-like material at the base. Governing equations of the problem are obtained through the minimization of energy using Hamilton's principle. Equations are nondimensionalized and written in terms of nondimensional parameters which are very useful in enginee...
