Late Cretaceous-Eocene Geological Evolution of the Pontides Based on New Stratigraphic and Palaeontologic Data Between the Black Sea Coast and Bursa (NW Turkey)
Ozcan, Zahide; Okay, Aral; Özcan, Ercan; Hakyemez, Aynur; Altıner, Sevinç (2012-01-01)
The Late Cretaceous-Eocene geological evolution of northwest Turkey between the Black Sea and Bursa was studied through detailed biostratigraphic characterization of eleven stratigraphic sections. The Upper Cretaceous sequence in the region starts with a major marine transgression and lies unconformably on a basement of Palaeozoic and Triassic rocks in the north (Istanbul-type basement) and on metamorphic rocks and Jurassic sedimentary rocks in the south (Sakarya-type basement). Four megasequences have been...
Late Cretaceous Volcaniclastics in NW Turkey
Boehm, Katharina; Wolfgring, Eric; Yılmaz, İsmail Ömer; Tüysüz, Okan; Wagreich, Michael (null; 2015-04-17)
On the southwestern coast of the Black Sea, in the western Pontides Upper Cretaceous tuff layers are present. The tuffs are intercalated with limestones, marls and turbidites and were investigated with focus on their geochemistry, to get new insights to the arrangement of terranes and ocean basins at this time. In the region two Upper Cretaceous volcanic units can be distinguished, separated by distinct red pelagic limestone successions, belonging to the Unaz Formation. The lower volcanic unit is named Dere...
Late Holocene deep-sea benthic foraminifera from the Sea of Marmara
Alavi, Seyed Naeim (Elsevier BV, 1988-10)
The benthic foraminiferal assemblages of two cores from the late-Holocene, organic-carbon-rich and carbonate-poor, deep-sea sediments of the eastern depression of the Sea of Marmara have been studied. They were deposited under high level of primary productivity and poorly oxygenated bottom-water conditions; they show low diversity and are dominated by a group of species adapted to an infaunal life style with wide bathymetric distribution (ca. 70–2000 m) in the Mediterranean Sea. Oxygen deficiency down to ab...
Late Cretaceous extensional denudation along a marble detachment fault zone in the Kirsehir massif near Kaman, central Turkey
Lefebvre, Come; Barnhoorn, Auke; van Hinsbergen, Douwe J. J.; Kaymakcı, Nuretdin; Vissers, Reinoud L. M. (2011-08-01)
In the Central Anatolian Crystalline Complex (CACC), 100 km scale metamorphic domains were exhumed in a context of north-south plate convergence during late Cretaceous to Cenozoic times. The timing, kinematics and mechanisms of exhumation have been the focus of previous studies in the southern Nigde Massif. In this study, we investigate the unexplored northern area regarding the tectonic features preserved on the edges of the Kirsehir Massif, based on detailed field-mapping in the Kaman area where high-grad...
Late Paleocene Orthophragminae (foraminfera) from the Haymana-Polatli Basin, central Turkey) and description of a new taxon, Orbitoclypeus haymanaensis
Özcan, Ercan; Sirel, Ercüment; Altıner, Sevinç; Çolakoğlu, Sinan (GeoScienceWorld, 2001-12-01)
A transgressive shallow-marine succession suggested as a reference-section for early Thanetian by the 'Early Paleogene working group' (IGCP 286) was studied for its orthophragminid foraminifera from Haymana-Polath Basin in central Anatolia. Orthophragminae, closely associated with Assilina yvettae and Operculina heberti, have been identified in a friable clastic-carbonate sequence which contains Glomalveolina in its different horizons. Basinal sediments with planktonic taxa overlie the shallow-water deposit...
