Why teenagers owning a bicycle helmet do not use their helmets
Lajunen, T; Rasanen, M (2001-09-01)
Problem: Recent reports about bicycle helmet wearing indicate that the number of helmet users is still very small among teenagers. The objective of this prevalence survey was to investigate why teenagers do not use a bicycle helmet even if they have one. Method: Data were collected at two schools in Helsinki, Finland. High school students (N = 965) completed a questionnaire about their cycling habits and bicycle helmet use. Results: A student's parents' positive attitude to bicycle helmet use was the strong...
Why silver is the unique catalyst for ethylene epoxidation
Ozbek, M. O.; Önal, Işık; van Santen, R. A. (2011-12-01)
The activities of Cu(2)O(001), Ag(2)O(001), and Au(2)O(001) surfaces for direct ethylene epoxidation and alternative paths for EO isomerization are studied. Among these three oxide surfaces, only Ag(2)O(001) surface enables direct path without a barrier. Au(2)O cannot regenerate surface oxygen, and overall reaction on Cu(2)O is endothermic. Furthermore, ring opening of ethylene oxide (EO) and subsequent acetaldehyde (AA) formation on Cu(2)O is more favorable than EO desorption. Ethylene adsorption on an oxy...
Why does Kevlar decompose, while Nomex does not, when treated with aqueous chlorine solutions?
Akdağ, Akın; Worley, S. D.; Broughton, R. M.; Webb, T. R.; Bray, Travis H. (American Chemical Society (ACS), 2007-05-01)
Kevlar and Nomex are high-performance polymers which have wide varieties of applications in daily life. Recently, they have been proposed to be biocidal materials when reacted with household bleach (sodium hypochlorite solution) because they contain amide moieties which can be chlorinated to generate biocidal N-halamine functional groups. Although Nomex can be chlorinated without any significant decomposition, Kevlar decomposes under the same chlorination conditions. In this study, two mimics for each of th...
Why Turkey needs to integrate virtual and remote laboratory technology to technical vocational school of higher education system: A situation analysis
Uzun, Erman; Kara, Ayse Gul (2007-09-07)
The emergences of new and advanced technologies have led to an increase in jobs that require more knowledgeable person in their field. In this context, vocational education tries to adapt itself to this new situation, because the industry demands well educated technicians with the ability to use new instruments, and devices. However, in Turkey the situation of the technical vocational school of higher education is not very optimistic. Although there are several problems in these educational institutions, th...
Why Does Asn71 Deamidate Faster Than Asn15 in the Enzyme Triosephosphate Isomerase? Answers from Microsecond Molecular Dynamics Simulation and QM/MM Free Energy Calculations
Ugur, Ilke; Marıon, Antoıne; Aviyente, Viktorya; Monard, Gerald (2015-02-17)
Deamidation is the uncatalyzed process by which asparagine or glutamine can be transformed into aspartic acid or glutamic acid, respectively. In its active homodimeric form, mammalian triosephosphate isomerase (TPI) contains two deamidation sites per monomer. Experimental evidence shows that the primary deamidation site (Asn71-Gly72) deamidates faster than the secondary deamidation site (Asn15-Gly16). To evaluate the factors controlling the rates of these two deamidation sites in TPI, we have performed grap...
