Innovative Thermal Management Concepts and Material Solutions for Future Space Vehicles
Esser, Burkard; Barcena, Jorge; Kuhn, Markus; Okan, Altug; Haynes, Lauren; Gianella, Sandro; Ortona, Alberto; Liedtke, Volker; Francesconi, Daniele; Tanno, Hideyuki (2016-11-01)
When entering a planetary atmosphere, space vehicles are exposed to extreme thermal loads. To protect the vehicle's interior, a thermal protection system is required. Future aerospace transportation demands solutions that exceed the performance of current systems and up-to-date material limits. Therefore, new and disruptive solutions must be envisaged to meet those extreme conditions. In the search of new solutions for sharp leading edges of future hypersonic reentry or transport vehicles, the THOR project,...
Advanced Design of Schottky Photodiodes in Bulk CMOS for High Speed Optical Receivers
Orsel, Ogulcan Emre; Erdil, Mertcan; Kocaman, Serdar (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), 2020-02-01)
This paper provides theoretical insight on how circular Schottky photodiodes in bulk CMOS can be optimized for certain integrated receiver applications. An optimal photodiode size is analytically demonstrated and the effects of a metal plate reflector are simulated using a transfer-matrix method, both for frontside and backside illumination. Finally, a distributed circuit model is presented, which deviates from the classical lumped model for large photodiodes or sheet resistances. The presented methodologie...
Novel position measurement and estimation methods for CNC machine systems
Kılıç, Ergin; Dölen, Melik; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2007)
Precision control of translational motion is vital for many CNC machine tools as the motion of the machinery affects the dimensional tolerance of the manufactured goods. However, the direct measurement along with the accurate motion control of machine usually requires relatively expensive sensors i.e. potentiometers, linear scales, laser interferometers. Hence, this study attempts to develop reference models utilizing low-cost sensors (i.e. rotary encoders) for accurate position estimation. First, an indire...
Fundamental Concepts of Performance Based Earthquake Engineering
Sucuoğlu, Haluk (null; 2015-08-29)
In modern earthquake engineering, seismic performance properties are more important than the resistance properties of structures. Seismic performance of a structure is related to the expected damage level under an earthquake excitation, and how this damage relates to safety and use of the building. Accordingly, estimation of member deformations becomes more critical than the estimation of internal forces since the deformations in the post elastic regions of the structure are well correlated with damage in t...
