Performance assessment of cement grout borehole plugs in basalt
Akgün, Haluk (Elsevier BV, 1994-01-01)
Flow tests have been conducted on expansive cement grout plugs with diameters of 160 mm and 200 mm, and length-to-diameter ratios of one, in boreholes in basalt blocks and in steel pipes. Two types of flow tests have been performed: pseudo-constant head tests and transient pulse tests. Hydration temperatures of cement grout plugs have been monitored in steel pipes with inside diameters ranging from 110 mm to 200 mm. During flow tests, basalt blocks have fractured, presumably due to water injection pressure,...
Performance assessment of hydraulic and cable shovels
Karpuz, Celal; Muftuoğlu, Yadikar (1992-04-01)
In this paper, performance assessment studies for hydraulic and cable shovels carried out on a nationwide scale in the surface lignite mines of Turkish Coal Enterprises are explained. The work was involved manual stopwatch surveys of shovel dig cycle times, estimation of bucket filling and hourly excavation capacity of shovels. The accumulated data is compared with the literature values in order to be evaluated in terms of ease of digging. The observed bucket size ranges of hydraulic and cable shovels varie...
PERFORMANCE ASSESSMENT OF COMMERCIAL HEAT PIPES WITH SINTERED AND GROOVED WICKS UNDER NATURAL CONVECTION
Atay, Atakan; Sariarslan, Busra; Kuscu, Yigit F.; Saygan, Samet; Akkus, Yigit; Gurer, A. Turker; Cetin, Barbaros; Dursunkaya, Zafer (2019-01-01)
Heat pipes are widely used in thermal management of high heat flux devices due to their ability of removing high heat loads with small temperature differences. While the thermal conductivity of standard metal coolers is approximately 100-500 W/m.K, effective thermal conductivities of heat pipes, which utilize phase-change heat transfer, can reach up to 50,000 W/m.K. In industrial applications, commercially available heat pipes are commonly preferred by thermal engineers due to their low cost and versatility...

Performance assessment of compacted bentonite/sand mixtures utilized as isolation material in underground waste disposal repositories
Ada, Mahir; Akgün, Haluk; Department of Geological Engineering (2007)
The design and development of isolation or backfill materials, which seal the disposal facility, are important for disposing the wastes. The use of compacted bentonite-sand for construction of shaft seals and liners for waste containment structures has been proposed by various studies. Therefore; it is aimed in this study to develop an isolation material to be used in underground waste repositories. For such designs to be effective, their performance need to be assessed and a minimum hydraulic conductivity ...
