Fueling Plankton Production by a Meandering Frontal Jet: A Case Study for the Alboran Sea (Western Mediterranean)
Oguz, Temel; Macias, Diego; Garcia-Lafuente, Jesus; Pascual, Ananda; Tintore, Joaquin (Public Library of Science (PLoS), 2014-11-5)
A three dimensional biophysical model was employed to illustrate the biological impacts of a meandering frontal jet, in terms of efficiency and persistency of the autotrophic frontal production, in marginal and semi-enclosed seas. We used the Alboran Sea of the Western Mediterranean as a case study. Here, a frontal jet with a width of 15–20 km, characterized by the relatively low density Atlantic water mass, flows eastward within the upper 100 m as a marked meandering current around the western and the ...
Drivers of Spider (Arachnida:Araneae) Biodiversity in an ‘Olive Grove Ecosystem’ in North-Western Anatolia (Çanakkale and Balıkesir, Turkey)
Elverici, Mert; Karaçetin, Evrim; Bilgin, Cemal Can; Balkız, Özge; Demirbaş Çağlayan, Semiha; Vural, Mecit (null; 2018-07-20)
Olive plantations cover vast areas on the Aegean coast of Turkey, and the southern foothills of Kaz Mountains is no exception. Olive trees dominate the terrestrial vegetation to such an extent that they form anovel ‘ecosystem’. The olive grove ecosystem is shaped by agricultural management, while impacts on biodiversity are largely unknown. We sampled spider communities living on soil surface and vegetation (understory herbaceous & tree canopy) microhabitats, alongside with various environmental variables ...
Fuel-dependent Effects on Droplet Burning and Sooting Behaviors in Microgravity
MANZELLO, Samuel L.; PARK, Seul-Hyun; Yozgatlıgil, Ahmet; Choi, Mun Young (American Chemical Society (ACS), 2009-07-01)
Measurements of soot concentration and soot mass were performed in microgravity conditions for hexane, heptane, nonane, and decane droplets burning in air at the NASA Glenn Research Center (GRC) 2.2 s drop tower in Cleveland, OH. Experiments performed in air at 75.9 and 101.3 kPa indicate that the maximum soot Volume fractions and soot mass are similar, to within experimental uncertainty, for all of the fuels tested. The flame standoff ratios (FSR) did not vary significantly for the fuels considered. The so...
Source components and magmatic processes in the genesis of Miocene to Quaternary lavas in western Turkey: constraints from HSE distribution and Hf-Pb-Os isotopes
Aldanmaz, Ercan; Pickard, Megan; Meisel, Thomas; Altunkaynak, Şafak; Sayıt, Kaan; Sen, Pinar; Hanan, Barry B.; Furman, Tanya (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2015-08-01)
Hf-Pb-Os isotope compositions and highly siderophile element (HSE) abundance variations are used to evaluate the mantle source characteristics and possible effects of differentiation processes in lavas from western Turkey, where the eruption of Late Miocene to Quaternary OIB-type intraplate mafic alkaline lavas followed pre-Middle Miocene convergent margin-type volcanism. Concentrations of Os, Ir, and Ru (IPGE) in the OIB-type intraplate lavas decrease with fractionation for primitive melts (MgO > 10 wt%), ...
Fed-batch cultivation of bakers' yeast: Effect of nutrient depletion and heat stress on cell composition
Ertugay, N; Hamamci, H; Bayındırlı, Alev (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 1997-01-01)
The physiology of a commercial strain of bakers' yeast was studied in terms of the cell composition under different growth conditions and of its response to stress. The study comprised fed-batch experiments since this is the system used in bakers' yeast industry. The classical fed-batch fermentation procedure was modified in that the yeast cells were continuously grown to a steady-state at a dilution rate of 0.1/h in order to achieve more or less the same initial starting point in terms of cell composition....
