Using seismic restrainers with gap to reduce isolator displacements in seismic-isolated bridges subjected to pulse-type ground motions
Dicleli, Murat; Kurtman, B. (2021-01-01)
© 2021 Taylor & Francis Group, LondonFor seismic isolated bridges (SIBs) subjected to near-fault (NF) ground motions with directivity effect, the isolator displacements tend to be considerably large. Consequently, isolators with very large dimensions may be required for SIBs located in NF zones. This may lead to very large expansion joints and very large seat widths as well. In this research, the efficiency of providing supplemental elastic-gap devices to improve the performance of seismic-isolated bridges ...
Employing Imino-Bis-Propane Diol Functional Polymers for Boron Removal from Geothermal Waters via Polymer Enhanced Ultrafiltration
Zerze, Hasan; Ozbelge, H. Onder; Bicak, Niyazi; Yılmaz, Levent (2015-09-02)
In this study, polymer enhanced ultrafiltration (PEUF) was used to remove boron from a geothermal water sample. The effect of co-ions such as chloride and sulfate on boron removal was investigated using previously synthesized poly (vinyl amino-N, N'-bis-propane diol) (GPVA) and its copolymers with DADMAC. The presence of co-anions and use of real waste water did not significantly reduce boron retentions and permeate fluxes. At optimum operating conditions 98% boron removal was achieved. It was demonstrated ...
Using high pressure microfluidization to improve physical properties and lycopene content of ketchup type products
Mert, Behiç (Elsevier BV, 2012-04-01)
This study evaluates the effects of high pressure microfluidization of ketchup mixes on the physical properties and lycopene content. During the processing the pressure level ranged between 200 and 2000 bar, while the number of passes was kept constant. When the treatment pressure was increased from 200 to 1200 bar, the yield stress, elastic modulus, storage modulus. and Bostwick consistency values of the ketchup samples improved. However, over-processing was observed for the samples treated at 1600 and 200...
Using artificially generated spectral data to improve protein secondary structure prediction from Fourier transform infrared spectra of proteins
Severcan, M; Haris, PI; Severcan, Feride (Elsevier BV, 2004-09-15)
Secondary structures of proteins have been predicted using neural networks from their Fourier transform infrared spectra. To improve the generalization ability of the neural networks, the training data set has been artificially increased by linear interpolation. The leave-one-out approach has been used to demonstrate the applicability of the method. Bayesian regularization has been used to train the neural networks and the predictions have been further improved by the maximum-likelihood estimation method. T...
Utilizing semantic interpretation of junctions for 3D-2D pose estimation
Pilz, Florian; Shi, Yan; Grest, Daniel; Pugeault, Nicolas; Kalkan, Sinan; Krüger, Norbert (2007-01-01)
In this paper we investigate the quality of 3D-2D pose estimates using hand labeled line and point correspondences. We select point correspondences from junctions in the image, allowing to construct a meaningful interpretation about how the junction is formed, as proposed in e.g. [1], [2], [3]. We make us of this information referred as the semantic interpretation, to identify the different types of junctions (i.e. L-junctions and T-junctions). T-junctions often denote occluding contour, and thus do not des...
