Surge and coastal inundation study of September 2014 storm in Giresun, Black Sea
Aydın, Deniz Can; Yalçıner, Ahmet Cevdet; Özyurt Tarakcıoğlu, Gülizar; Department of Civil Engineering (2016)
In Turkey, due to the fact that the Black Sea coast is vulnerable to storms and coastal hazards, further comprehensive studies for storm surge and consequent coastal inundation are necessary. The aim of this study is to investigate wave formation under storm conditions and analyze coastal flooding in Giresun during the storm event occurred between 23-26 September 2014. For this purpose numerical studies are carried out in two phases. In phase 1, coupled ADCIRC+SWAN model is used for examining wave generatio...
FLOOD HAZARD ANALYSIS DUE TO OVERTOPPING OF DALAMAN AKKOPRU DAM: A CASE STUDY
Yılmaz, Kutay; Oruç, Yunus; Darama, Yakup; Melek, Abiddin Berhan; Ünal, Çağla Irmak (2022-07-01)
A study was made to determine the hypothetical failure of the Dalaman Akköprü Dam by overtopping failure mechanisms. For this purpose, a 2D Hydraulic Model was constructed using HEC-RAS to determine the propagation of flood due to the failure of the dam body for this case. Froehlich equations were used to predict breaching parameters of the Akköprü Dam. After the calibration of the hydraulic model, the hydraulic model was run to determine the possible flooding of Ortaca, Dalaman, and Köyceğiz towns. Ana...
FLOOD INTERACTION WITH RIVER CROSSINGS - A CASE-STUDY

Flood Interaction with River Crossings: A Case Study
Yanmaz, Ali Melih (null, Springer, 1994-01-01)
Floods are natural hazards whose effects can deeply affect the economic and environmental equilibria of a region. Quality of life of people living in areas close to rivers depends on both the risk that a flood would occur and the reliability of flood forecast, warning and control systems. Tools for forecasting and mitigating floods have been developed through research in the recent past. Two innovations currently influence flood hazard mitigation, after many decades of lack of significant progress: they are...
Wave climate study for an LNG terminal near Marmara Ereglisi, Turkey
Akyarli, Adnan; Yalçıner, Ahmet Cevdet (1997-01-01)
A liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal has been constructed near Marmara Ereglisi - a coastal town located at the northern coast of the Sea of Marmara in Turkey - to unload imported LNG from Algeria. Regarding the wave related issues in the design of the terminal and offshore operations, a wave climate study - comprising direct wave measurements carried out by a directional type wave buoy during one year period and hindcasting studies based on ten years of hourly wind data recorded at Tekirdag meteorologica...
