Computational modelling of carbon nanotube reinforced polymer composites
Zuberi, Muhammad Jibran Shahzad; Esat, Volkan; Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2014-7)
This thesis investigates the effects of chirality and size of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) on the mechanical properties of both SWNTs and carbon nanotube reinforced epoxy composites (CNTRPs). First, a novel 3D beam element finite element model is developed based on equivalent-continuum mechanics approach and used for replacing C-C chemical bond for modelling SWNTs. The effects of diameter and chirality on the Young’s moduli, shear moduli, shear strains and Poisson’s ratios of SWNTs are studied. Fo...
Computational modeling of thermal and shrinkage-induced cracking in concrete
Ghasabeh, Mehran; Göktepe, Serdar; Yaman, İsmail Özgür; Department of Civil Engineering (2021-3-3)
This work is concerned with the computational modeling of thermal and shrinkage-induced cracking in concrete. Thermal and hygral gradients develop within concrete structures of varying sizes and aspect ratios due to the intrinsic physicochemical phenomena accompanied by adverse environmental effects. These spatio-temporal gradients invariably result in uneven volumetric deformations that can cause stress concentrations when the concrete is sufficiently rigid. Then, when the gained tensile strength is lower ...
Computational Modeling of Shrinkage-Induced Cracking in Concrete
Ghasabeh, Mehran; Göktepe, Serdar (null; 2019-09-09)
This contribution is concerned with the computational modeling of durability problems related to drying shrinkage. The associated formulations are conducted by developing a coupled constitutive modeling approach, which is furnished by the robust computational tools within the framework of poroviscoelasticity. In contrast to the existing studies, we employ a physically motivated technique where the pore pressure is obtained as a function of the water content that is determined using sorption‐desorption equat...
Computational modelling of electro-active polymers
Dal, Sinan Fırat; Göktepe, Serdar; Department of Civil Engineering (2019)
This study is concerned with the stability of Electro-Active Polymers (EAPs) having geometries with periodic microstructures subjected to coupled electromechanical effects. For this purpose, coupled electromechanical equations, which are nonlinear, are discretized using the Finite Element Method (FEM) under the prescribed boundary conditions. EAPs are smart materials that may undergo large mechanical deformations when subjected to an electric field. Unlike many other materials that show permanent deformatio...
Computational Modeling of Spintronic Materials
Sürücü, Gökhan (Frontiers, 2021-03-01)
In research topic “Computational Modeling of Spintronic Materials”, we collected 17 articles dealing with themes as below:i. Recent advances of spintronic materials;ii. Frontiers in computational modeling of functional materials.Heulser alloys are famous spintronic materials due to they usually host high Curie temperature and adjustable structures. Zhang et al. (Zhang et al., 2020) proposed quaternary Heusler compound CoCrScSn is a half-metal with 100% spin-polarization. Moreover, the elastic constants and ...
