Lactate and ethanol productions by Rhizopus oryzae ATCC 9363 and activities of related pyruvate branch point enzymes
Buyukkileci, Ali Oguz; Hamamcı, Haluk; Yucel, Meral (2006-11-01)
In Rhizopus oryzae cultivations, lactate production decreased and ethanol and biomass productions increased as inoculated spore concentration increased. Spore concentrations of 1x10(3) and 1x10(4) spores ml(-1) induced tightly packed clumps, whereas 1x10(5) and 1 X 10(6) spores ml(-1) induced filamentous growth.

Aromatase and C/EBP expression after global ischemia/reperfusion injury in rat hippocampus
Kelicen, P.; Burul-Bozkurt, N.; Cincioglu, M.; Dagdeviren, M.; Pekiner, C. (2009-08-15)
Background and aims: Global ischemia after cardiac arrest, intraoperative hypoxia/hypotension, or hemorrhagic shock is one of the causes of brain injury, resulting in severe neurological and neurobehavioral deficit. Since neurodegeneration can be protected from by local aromatase expression and estrogen synthesis can be neuroprotective in the ischemia/reperfusion process, aromatase may be a potential target to study reperfusion injury after brain ischemia. We investigated the expression of aromatase and C/E...
Nicotine is a Selective Pharmacological Chaperone of Acetylcholine Receptor Number and Stoichiometry. Implications for Drug Discovery
Lester, Henry A.; Xiao, Cheng; Srinivasan, Rahul; Son, Çağdaş Devrim; Miwa, Julie; Pantoja, Rigo; Banghart, Matthew R.; Dougherty, Dennis A.; Goate, Alison M.; Wang, Jen C. (2009-03-01)
The acronym SePhaChARNS, for "selective pharmacological chaperoning of acetylcholine receptor number and stoichiometry," is introduced. We hypothesize that SePhaChARNS underlies classical observations that chronic exposure to nicotine causes "upregulation" of nicotinic receptors (nAChRs). If the hypothesis is proven, (1) SePhaChARNS is the molecular mechanism of the first step in neuroadaptation to chronic nicotine; and (2) nicotine addiction is partially a disease of excessive chaperoning. The chaperone is...
GST isoenzymes in matched normal and neoplastic breast tissue

The potential to metabolize endogenous and exogenous substances may influence breast cancer development and tumor growth. Therefore we investigated GST activity and the protein expression of glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) isoenzymes known to be involved in the metabolism of endogenous and exogenous carcinogens in breast cancer tissue to obtain new information on their possible role in tumor progression.
