MiSTA: An Age-Optimized Slotted ALOHA Protocol
Ahmetoglu, Mutlu; Yavascan, Orhan Tahir; Uysal, Elif (2022-09-01)
We introduce minislotted threshold ALOHA (MiSTA), a slotted ALOHA modification designed to minimize the network-wide time average Age of Information (AoI). In MiSTA, sources whose ages are below a certain threshold stay silent. A node with the age above the threshold becomes active in the next time frame with a certain probability. The active node first transmits a short control sequence in a minislot ahead of actual data transmission, and if collision is sensed, it backs off with a certain probability. We ...
Tablet PCs as instructional tools in English as a foreign language education
Savaş, Perihan (2014-01-01)
The main goal of the study presented in this paper was to investigate the perceptions of 40 pre-service English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers about the effectiveness of Tablet PCs as instructional tools in EFL classes. The study was conducted at a state university in Turkey and the data collection was mainly done via two questionnaires. Quantitative data analysis done on participants' responses revealed that the majority of preservice ELF teachers regarded Tablet PCs as effective instructional tools ...
Amartya Sen’s idea of justice, and its relations with John Rawls and Adam Smith
Dağ, Umut; Turan, Şeref Halil; Department of Philosophy (2015)
The aim of this thesis is to examine Amartya Sen s idea of justice and its relation to John Rawls and Adam Smith. Amartya Sen s idea of justice could be seen as a critique of Rawls theory of justice as well as a proposal of a new approach instead. Sen s critique of Rawls theory of justice is basically based on the critique of transcendental institutionalism. Instead Sen offers the realization focused comparison as an alternative for the idea of justice. To explicate this alternative approach Sen introduces ...
Rumour propagation: an operational research approach by computational and information theory
Guerbuez, Burcu; Mawengkang, Herman; Husein, Ismail; Weber, Gerhard Wilhelm (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2021-01-01)
Rumours are a kind of information that has a impact on social life and economies, which spread quickly and widely, especially, via internet. Recently, the spread of information affects our daily lives due to the increasing number of social media users. Rumours are defined in social areas which are delivered by gossips, fake news, marketing, social media all the way even to revolutions. In this paper, we study the dynamics of a rumour propagation model with a numerical approach. By using an algorithmic techn...
Swarm robotics: From sources of inspiration to domains of application
Şahin, Erol (2005-01-01)
Swarm robotics is a novel approach to the coordination of large numbers of relatively simple robots which takes its inspiration from social insects. This paper proposes a definition to this newly emerging approach by 1) describing the desirable properties of swarm robotic systems, as observed in the system-level functioning of social insects, 2) proposing a definition for the term swarm robotics, and putting forward a set of criteria that can be used to distinguish swarm robotics research from other multi-r...
