Introduction: Swimming starts are an important component for decreasing the total race time, especially in short events. In this phase of swimming, the aim is to increase performance using many different techniques and starting platforms. Objectives: The effects of height and slope of the starting block on kick-start performance were assessed in this study. Methods: Six male competitive swimmers performed 24 kick-starts using four block settings: 65 cm & 75 cm flat and 65 cm & 75 cm sloped. Two-dimensional kinetic and three-dimensional kinematic data were analyzed, including average and maximum horizontal/vertical forces and impulses; reaction times; movement and block times; and take-off vertical/horizontal velocities. Two-way within-subject design ANOVAs were implemented to test the effects of block height and slope on the kinetic and kinematic variables. Results: Block slope was the main factor affecting most of the dependent variables. Shorter block and movement times, greater average and maximum vertical forces, vertical impulse, and maximum horizontal force were found for the sloped settings. An inverse relationship was found between block height and 0-5 m times. Conclusion: Based on the results, blocks with height of 75 cm and slope of 10 degrees provided better results in swimmers'performance in the block phase.

Effects of swimming start block slope and height on swimming start performance
Ödek, Uğur; Kirazcı, Sadettin; Department of Physical Education and Sports (2015)
The purpose of the present study was to examine effects of slope and height of starting block on swimming start performance. Total 6 six competitive swimmers (Mage = 17.9years, SD = 1.18; MBW = 82.65kg, SD = 1.38; Mheight = 180.83cm, SD = 2.93) participated in this study. 3-dimensional motion analysis and 2-dimensional dynamic data analysis techniques used to evaluate block phase of swimming start. Kinematic and kinetic data obtained by using four different block settings. Multiple two-way within subject AN...
Nonlinear evolution and runup–rundown of long waves over a sloping beach
Kanoğlu, Utku (Cambridge University Press (CUP), 2004-8-25)
The initial value problem of the nonlinear evolution, shoreline motion and flow velocities of long waves climbing sloping beaches is solved analytically for different initial waveforms. A major difficulty in earlier work utilizing hodograph-type transformation when solving either boundary value or initial value problems has been the specification of equivalent boundary or initial condition in the transformed space. Here, in solving the initial value problem, the transformation is linearized in space at t = ...
Long waves generation by atmospheric pressure disturbances and case study
Çabuk, Özge; Yalçıner, Ahmet Cevdet; Department of Civil Engineering (2019)
One of the interesting marine events is the long wave generation due to spatial and temporal changes of atmospheric pressure and wind fields during storm events. These kind of phenomena is called as storm surge and cause basin wide and local water level changes in sea surface and sometimes amplifies at some regions. There are examples of these kinds of event in all over the world. In this study the atmospheric pressure and wind fields are used as the input to the numerical model NAMI DANCE which solves Nonl...
Forced hydraulic jump on artificially roughened beds
Şimşek, Çağdaş; Tokyay, Nuray; Department of Civil Engineering (2006)
In the scope of the study, prismatic roughness elements with different longitudinal spacing and arrangements have been tested in a rectangular flume in order to reveal their effects on fundamental characteristics of a hydraulic jump. Two basic roughness types with altering arrangements have been tested. Roughness elements of the first type extends through the channel width against the flow with varying length and pitch ratios for different arrangements. The second type is of staggered essence and produced b...
Assessment of changes in climate indices of the mediterranean climate region of Turkey
Çetinkaya , İzem; Yücel, İsmail; Department of Civil Engineering (2020-10-28)
As a consequence of climate change, frequency and intensity changes in extreme weather events have occurred. One of the most vulnerable regions of the world that is affected by the climate change is the Mediterranean region. Turkey as a Mediterranean country has a great importance to investigate the changes in climate behavior. 57 stations from Mediterranean climate region of Turkey have been selected as the study area for this thesis. This study aims to assess the climate indices that carry the valua...
