Toulmin's argumentation model is an effective tool in the description of one step of an argument. However, there is a need to consider more than this model to portray a comprehensive argumentation process. The purpose of the study is to investigate types of global argumentation structures that emerged while prospective middle school mathematics teachers were working on conjecture-generation activities related to geometry. The participants were junior prospective middle school mathematics teachers at a state university in Ankara, Turkey. The eight global argumentation structures that emerged via conjecture-generation activities of two groups were classified as mono structures and hybrid structures. According to the findings, three types of mono structures, which are the reservoir-structure, the funneling-structure, and the branching-structure, were seen among four possible cases. Three types of hybrid structures were observed among eleven possible combinations of the mono structures, namely, the reservoir-funneling-structure, the line-branching-structure, and the line-reservoir-branching-structure.

A Study of argumentation in Turkish within a Bayesian reasoning framework : arguments from ignorance
Karaaslan, Hatice; Hohenberger, Annette Edeltraud; Demir, Mehmet Hilmi; Department of Cognitive Sciences (2012)
In this dissertation, a normative prescriptive paradigm, namely a Bayesian theory of content-dependent argument strength, was employed in order to investigate argumentation, specifically the classic fallacy of the “argument from ignorance” or “argumentum ad ignorantiam”. The study was carried out in Turkish with Turkish participants. In the Bayesian framework, argument strength is determined by the interactions between three major factors: prior belief, polarity, and evidence reliability. In addition, topic...
How technology supports argumentation structures in the geometry context
Erkek, Özlem; Işıksal Bostan, Mine (null; 2018-07-02)
Argumentation encompasses higher order thinking skills, such as generating hypothesis, justifying ideas, synthesizing problems, challenging others’ views, comparing different positions and evaluating hypotheses via empirical evidence (Hewit, 2010). The teacher plays a crucial role in the argumentation process and, thus, should be pedagogically equipped to effectively prepare and implement an argumentation-based instruction. The aim of the present study was to investigate the nature of the argumentation stru...
Karşıtlık Karesi Aristoteles’in kategoriler mantığında karşıtlık, altkarşıtlık, altıklık ve çelişki yasalarını ifade eder. Bu ilişkileri tanımladıktan sonra karşıtlık karesini kuracağız. Bu ç...
Automatic sense prediction of implicit discourse relations in Turkish
Kurfalı, Murathan; Zeyrek Bozşahin, Deniz; Department of Cognitive Sciences (2016)
In discourse parsing, the sense prediction of the Implicit discourse relations poses the most significant challenge. The thesis aims to develop a supervised system to predict the sense of implicit discourse relations in Turkish Discourse Bank (TDB). In order to accomplish that goal, the discourse level annotations obtained from TDB are used. TDB follows the PDTB-2’s sense hierarchy and for all experiments within the current study, only CLASS senses are considered. As the primary experiment, the classifiers ...
Critique of epistemic externalism and defense of foundationalist internalism
Altuğ, Ali Haydar; Ceylan, Yasin; Department of Philosophy (2015)
This thesis argues that epistemic externalism is untenable and defends that, although facing some severe problems, internalism is the only possible remaining option for a theory of knowledge and justification. It defends a foundationalist version of internalism, in which one’s beliefs about her own state of mind are taken to be certain. In this way, together with propositions of logic and mathematics, foundationalist requirement of certain and basic beliefs is rendered. Further, based on Laurence Bonjour’s ...
