A new technique for the determination of the thermal diffusivity of a tyre compound is proposed. The diffusivity is defined as the ratio between the thermal conductivity and the product of the specific heat and density. This technique is based on infrared measurement and successive analysis of the tyre cooling. Tyre samples were heated up by a laser at constant power rate and the heating and the next cooling of the tyres were registered versus time by mean of thermocouples and infrared cameras. Determination of the thermal diffusivity was thus estimated by mean of home-made model. The research activity was carried out in the laboratories of the department of Mechanics and Energetics of the University of Naples Federico II, in cooperation with the Combustion Institute of the CNR in Naples. © 2012 Praise Worthy Prize S.r.l. - All rights reserved.

Analysis of grain burnback and international flow in solid propellant rocket motors in 3-dimensions
Yıldırım, Cengizhan; Aksel, Mehmet Haluk; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2007)
In this thesis, Initial Value Problem of Level-set Method is applied to solid propellant combustion to find the grain burnback. For the performance prediction of the rocket motor, 0-D, 1-D or 3-D flow models are used depending on the type of thre grain configuration.
Optimization of the mechanical properties of Ti-6Al-4V alloy fabricated by selective laser melting using thermohydrogen processes
BILGIN, Guney Mert; Esen, Ziya; Akin, Seniz Kushan; Dericioğlu, Arcan Fehmi (2017-07-17)
2-step Thermo Hydrogen Process (THP) including hydrogenation and dehydrogenation steps was applied to Ti-6Al-4V alloy fabricated by selective laser melting (SLM) process to refine the microstructure and to increase the ductility of the alloy. It was observed that as-fabricated alloy's surface was composed of oxides of titanium and aluminum, which may alter the hydrogenation kinetics. The hydrogen treatment for 1 hat 650 degrees C, the maximum hydrogen solubility temperature of the alloy, transformed startin...
Determination of absolute transport efficiencies of Be, Cd, In, Pb and Bi for electrothermal vaporization sample introduction into an inductively coupled plasma using an in-line electrostatic precipitator
Ertaş, Gülay (Elsevier BV, 2003-09-26)
A novel laboratory-constructed electrostatic precipitator for the determination of analyte transport efficiencies from a tube furnace electrothermal vaporization (ETV) sample introduction system is described. This simple experimental set up captures the analyte electrostatically using a negative corona discharge. The absolute transport efficiencies using experimental conditions typical of those applied to real analysis by ETV-ICP-MS were determined for Be, Cd, In, Pb and Bi to be 26 +/- 3, 39 +/- 8, 35 +/- ...
Analysis of stress in a solid cylinder with periodic heat generation
Varlı, Ekin; Eraslan, Ahmet Nedim; Department of Engineering Sciences (2015)
Thermoelastic stress response of a periodic heat generating solid cylinder is investigated by analytical means. The cylinder is initially at zero temperature. For times greater than zero, heat is generated internally and slowly at a time dependent rate. Two periodic heat generation rates are used. The temperature distribution in the solid cylinder corresponding to each generation rate is obtained by making use of Duhamel’s theorem. An uncoupled thermoelastic solution of the solid cylinder is then obtained u...
Evaluation of latent heat of solidification of grey cast iron from cooling curves
Çetin, Asude; Kalkanlı, Ali (2005-01-01)
The temperature history in the casting obtained from cooling curves can be used to determine some information related to latent heat release during alloy solidification. This work presents a procedure for the evaluation of latent heat of primary and eutectic solidification of grey cast iron from cooling curves based upon the Newtonian cooling principle. The thermal data obtained from quik-cups are processed with the Mathcad code in order to obtain the cooling curve, its first and second derivatives and the ...
