Pyridine extraction of coal can separate the small molecules from macromolecule skeleton and subsequently impacts the thermal behavior of coal. A perhydrous bituminous coal with a high content of volatile matters was extracted by pyridine under microwave irradiation with an extraction yield of 24.6% on the dry, ash free basis (daf). The thermal behavior of the raw coal, its extract and residue was investigated by thermogravimetric analysis and in-situ Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) based on the evolution of weight loss and functional groups, respectively. Though pyridine extraction had only slight effect on TG curve of the perhydrous coal, it greatly influenced the evolution of functional groups during pyrolysis. Aromatic C-H and C=O was the most susceptible to pyridine extraction because the absence of extractable moieties reduced the production of radicals and the reactions between small molecules and macromolecules during pyrolysis. The interactions between extractable small molecules and non-extractable macromolecules could retard the decomposition of aromatic C=C and hydroxyls. The evolution of aliphatic groups and C-O was slightly impacted due to the occurrence of the abundant aliphatic side groups and bridge bonds in macromolecule structures. (C) 2018 Energy Institute. Effect of particle size on coal pyrolysis
Kök, Mustafa Verşan; Karacan, Ozgen; Hicyilmaz, Cahit (1998-01-01)
This research comprises the effect of particle size on coal pyrolysis by thermogravimetry (TG/DTG). All the experiments were conducted at non-isothermal heating conditions with a heating rate of 10 degrees C min(-1). in the temperature range of 20-600 degrees C, under nitrogen atmosphere. Different fractions of Cayirhan coal coal showed differences in TG/DTG curves, peak temperatures and residue values. The Arrhenius model is applied to determine the kinetic parameters from TG/DTG curves.
Effect of carbon to nitrogen ratio on the physical and chemical properties of activated sludge
Durmaz, B; Sanin, Faika Dilek (2003-11-01)
The effect of carbon to nitrogen ratio (C/N) of the feed on the physical and surface chemical properties of activated sludge is investigated. Semi-continuous reactors with 2 liters volume were operated at a mean cell residence time of 8 days. These mixed culture reactors were operated at 3 different carbon to nitrogen ratio. The operation of conventional activated sludge plants treating municipal wastewater is represented with reactors having a C/N ratio of 21 (in terms of the ratio of COD to TKN). Carbon a...
Influence of biomass thermal pre-treatment on the particulate matter formation during pulverized co-combustion with lignite coal
Magalhaes, Duarte; Kazanç Özerinç, Feyza (2022-01-15)
This work investigated the particulate matter formation during co-combustion of thermally pre-treated biomass with coal. Olive residue was chosen as agricultural waste biomass, and Tunçbilek lignite as the coal. The biomass was thermally pretreated to assess the influence of the pretreatment temperature on particulate matter formation during co-combustion. Specifically, the olive residue was torrefied (at 275 °C) and pyrolyzed (at 500 °C) using a tubular oven. The biomass-coal blends in a 50:50 wt% ratio we...
Effect of particle size on the thermal and combustion properties of coal
Kök, Mustafa Verşan; Hiçyilmaz, C.; Karacan, Ö. (1997-10-22)
In this research effect of particle size on the combustion properties of Cayirhan coal sample was studied. Non-isothermal thermogravimetry and derivative thermogravimetry (TG/DTG) experiment were carried out for twelve different size fractions of the Cayirhan coal sample. Thermogravimetry experiments were performed from ambient to 900 degrees C in air atmosphere. Differential thermogravimetric data were analysed using an Arrhenius type reaction model assuming a first-order reaction. Kinetic parameters of th...
Influence of coal briquette size on the combustion kinetics
Altun, Naci Emre; Bagci, AS (Elsevier BV, 2004-08-15)
In this study, the effects of one of the most important parameters in coal briquetting process, the briquette size, on the combustion behaviour of coal briquettes were determined from the view of combustion kinetics, i.e. their liability to ignite and combust. Effect of size on the combustion kinetics was treated by two different approaches. The first one consists of combustion kinetics experiments with briquettes of increasing sizes, thus of expanding volumes. In the second phase, briquette dimensions were...
