Measurement of particulate volume fraction in a coflow diffusion flame using transient thermocouple technique
Rolando, A; D'Alessio, A; D'Anna, A; Allouis, Christophe Gerard; Beretta, F; Minutolo, P (2004-05-01)
Transient-thermocouple-based measurements have been used to detect soot and nanoparticles in a coflowing diffusion flame of ethylene. Total particulate volume fractions are measured as a function of the radial coordinate at different axial locations and are compared with the results obtained by UV-visible absorption measurements. The good agreement between the two independent measurements demonstrates that transient-thermocouple measurement is a powerful technique to measure total particulate volume fractio...
Measurement of leading and trailing edge vortex shedding mechanism for flapping airfoil in hover using particle image velocimetry technique
Çekinmez, Aybüge; Alemdaroğlu, Hüseyin Nafiz; Department of Aerospace Engineering (2013)
In this thesis, the vortex shedding formation/mechanism for flapping airfoil making the figure of eight motion in hover is investigated experimentally using Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) technique and numerically for some parameters determined. For this investigation, a new flapping mechanism is designed and implemented to the existing water tank, where the airfoil is traversed laterally, such that the motion depicts a figure of eight. The traversing system is moved both in x (horizontal) and y (vertical...

Measurement of Lift and Drag Force in Morphing Wings Using High Precision Load Cell
Özkanaktı, Harun; Körpe, Durmuş Sinan; Özgen, Serkan (2015-06-29)
This study focuses on experimental investigation of three different morphing wing planforms and a baseline wing planform using commercial CFD software and load cell measurements in a wind tunnel for the validation of an optimization code developed separately [1]. The wing planforms of interest originate from an optimization code that minimizes drag for a required lift utilizing a 3-D panel method with a 2-D boundary layer solver. The optimization method is gradient based. The first planform of interest is t...
Measurement of residual stress in air plasma-sprayed Y2O3-ZrO2 thermal barrier coating system using micro-Raman spectroscopy
Tanaka, Makoto; Hasegawa, Makoto; Dericioğlu, Arcan Fehmi; Kagawa, Yutaka (2006-03-15)
Residual stress in air plasma-sprayed Y2O3 stabilized ZrO2 thermal barrier coating (TBC) has been measured using micro-Raman spectroscopy. The frequency shift of Raman peak from tetragonal phase (approximate to 640 cm(-1)) is used for determination of local stress in TBC. The relation between Raman peak shift and applied uniaxial stress is measured using a freestanding specimen. The relation is used to determine actual residual stress of the TBC layer coated on a stainless steel substrate. The uniaxial stre...
