Dynamic failure of 30-ply curved unidirectional CFRP laminate under quasi-static moment/axial combined loading used in the experiments of Tasdemir (2018) is investigated numerically. 2D and 3D explicit finite element analyses are carried out using cohesive zone elements and contact interactions to simulate progressive delamination. In both analyses, dynamic delamination initiates at the maximum radial stress location. The resultant crack propagation in both 2D and 3D simulations is observed to be intersonic in the arm regions, with lower crack tip speeds observed for the 3D case. In 3D simulations, a non-uniform crack front is observed, with the crack nucleating at the middle of the width, propagating to the edges and both arms at sub-Rayleigh speed before continuing to propagate in the arms at intersonic speeds. Intermittent local contact regions are observed in 2D simulations behind the crack tip, which are also observed in the 3D simulations at the free edge with a continuous contact line reaching the middle of the crack front, emphasizing the three-dimensional nature of the delamination growth. Load-displacement curves of both 2D and 3D simulations show good correlations with experimental results.

3D Simulation of Dynamic Delamination in Curved Composite Laminates
Ata, Tamer Tahir; Çöker, Demirkan (Elsevier BV; 2019-01-01)
In this study, dynamic fracture of curved carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) laminates under quasi-static loading is investigated using explicit three dimensional (3D) finite element method in conjunction with Cohesive Zone Modelling (CZM). The simulations are based on the experimental studies conducted by Tasdemir (2018). Three dimensional finite element models of two different ply architectures (unidirectional and fabric laminate) are generated corresponding to the experimental configurations. The com...
Discrete fracture network modeling and gel injection simulation in fractured carbonates
Soltanieh, Ashkan; Akın, Serhat; Department of Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering (2015)
Discrete Fracture Network (DFN) model is a recently developed, efficient approach to model fractured reservoirs. This model directly takes into account the geometry as well as conductivity and connectivity of fractures forming a network. It is a special tool that considers fluid flow and transport processes in fractured rock masses through a system of connected fractures. Because of fractured nature of carbonate reservoirs, hydrocarbon production is usually restricted by excess water production. Polymer gel...
Deep learning-based encoder for one-bit quantization
Balevi, Eren; Andrews, Jeffrey G. (2019-12-01)
© 2019 IEEE.This paper proposes a deep learning-based error correction coding for AWGN channels under the constraint of one-bit quantization in receivers. An autoencoder is designed and integrated with a turbo code that acts as an implicit regularization. This implicit regularizer facilitates approaching the Shannon bound for the one-bit quantized AWGN channels even if the autoencoder is trained suboptimally, since one-bit quantization stymies ideal training. Our empirical results show that the proposed cod...
Seismic response of autoclaved aerated concrete masonry infill walls under in-plane and out-of-plane seismic demands
Binici, Barış; Canbay, Erdem; Uzgan, Ugur; ERYURTLU, ZAFER; Yakut, Ahmet (2018-09-01)
Infill walls of reinforced concrete (RC) frames exhibit significant vulnerability when subjected to in‐plane (IP) and out‐of‐plane (OOP) seismic demands. Despite the vast number of tests investigating the behavior of brick masonry infill walls in RC frames, past research is concerned with infill walls made up of autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC) blocks. In this study, six single‐bay, single‐story, half‐scaled RC frames were tested under the action of IP cyclic displacement excursions and/or OOP pressure. Th...
Computer simulation of void growth dynamics under the action of electromigration and capillary forces in narrow thin interconnects
Ogurtani, TO; Oren, EE (2001-08-01)
A comprehensive picture of void dynamics in connection with the critical morphological evolution has been developed in order to understand the conditions under which premature failure of metallic thin interconnects occurs. Our mathematical model on the mass flow and accumulation on void surfaces, under the action of applied electrostatic and elastostatic force fields, and capillary effects, follows an irreversible but discrete thermodynamic formulation of interphases and surfaces. This formalism also takes ...
