Enhanced localized surface plasmon resonance obtained in two step etched silicon nanowires decorated with silver nanoparticles
Mulazimoglu, Emre; Nogay, Gizem; Turan, Raşit; Ünalan, Hüsnü Emrah (2013-09-30)
We report on localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of silicon nanowires decorated with silver nanoparticles. Hydrogen peroxide in metal-assisted-etching method degenerates the surface of nanowires and creates oxygen-related defect sites. These defect sites enhance the infrared absorption at higher frequencies and emit visible light by band-to-band radiative recombination. Moreover, an almost 50-fold enhanced LSPR was obtained for 24 nm thick silver deposited 5 mu m long silicon nanowires. This enhancem...
Enhanced absorption of thin-film photovoltaic cells using an optical cavity
Weinstein, Lee A.; HSU, Wei-Chun; Yerci, Selçuk; Boriskina, Svetlana V.; CHEN, Gang (2015-05-01)
We show via numerical simulations that the absorption and solar energy conversion efficiency of a thin-film photovoltaic (PV) cell can be significantly enhanced by embedding it into an optical cavity. A reflective hemi-ellipsoid with an aperture for sunlight placed over a tilted PV cell reflects unabsorbed photons back to the cell, allowing for multiple opportunities for absorption. Ray tracing simulations predict that with the proposed cavity a textured thin-film silicon cell can exceed the Yablonovitch (L...
Enhanced second harmonic generation from coupled asymmetric plasmonic metal nanostructures
Yıldız, Bilge Can; Taşgın, Mehmet Emre; Abak, Musa Kurtuluş; Coskun, Sahin; Ünalan, Hüsnü Emrah; Bek, Alpan (IOP Publishing, 2015-12-01)
We experimentally demonstrate that two coupled metal nanostructures (MNSs), a silver nanowire and bipyramid, can produce similar to 30 times enhanced second harmonic generation compared to the particles alone. We develop a simple theoretical model, presenting the path interference effects in the nonlinear response of coupled MNSs. We show that the reason for such an enhancement can be the occurrence of a Fano resonance due to the coupling of the converter MNS to the long-lived mode of the attached MNS.
