Anaerobic digestion of microalgal (Chlorella vulgaris) biomass as a source of biogas and biofertilizer
Dogan-Subasi, Eylem; Demirer, Göksel Niyazi (2016-07-01)
Increased energy demand of the world poses risk because of the limitation of fossil fuel resources. Moreover, global warming has been reached to an alarming level because of carbon dioxide emissions originated from different anthropogenic activities. Therefore, alternative energy sources are needed, and in this sense, anaerobic digestion of microalgal biomass for biomethane production might be one attractive approach. In this study, biogas production from biomass of Chlorella vulgaris grown on wastewater wi...

Anaerobic biotransformation and methane generation potential of cheese whey in batch and UASB reactors
Bayramoğlu, Tuba Hande; GÜVEN, ENGİN; DEMİRER, GÖKSEL NİYAZİ (2001-03-01)
Anaerobic treatability and methane generation potential of cheese whey were determined in batch reactors. Furthermore, the effect of nutrient and trace metal supplementation on the batch anaerobic treatment, and the high-rate anaerobic treatability of cheese whey in upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactors were investigated. To this purpose biochemical methane potential experiments were conducted and single- and two-stage UASB reactors with granular cultures were operated. In UASB experiments signifi...
Anaerobic biogasification of undiluted dairy manure in leaching bed reactors
Demirer, Göksel Niyazi; Chen, S. (Elsevier BV, 2008-01-01)
Dry anaerobic digestion of high solids animal manure is of increasing importance since conventional slurry digestion is not an effective system for these manures. The investment costs for large-size reactors, costs for heating these reactors, handling, dewatering, and the disposal of the digested residue decrease the benefits of conventional slurry anaerobic digestion for high solids animal manure. Even though leaching bed reactors (LBR) constitute a promising option for dry anaerobic biogasification of ani...
Anaerobic treatment of dilute wastewaters
Alptekin (Ener), Emel; Demirer, Göksel Niyazi; Department of Environmental Engineering (2008)
In this study, domestic wastewater was used to determine the anaerobic treatment performances of a dilute wastewater in one-phase upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) system and two-phase upflow anaerobic filter (UAF) and UASB system. The acidification performances of domestic wastewater were compared in UAF and UASB reactors. The degree of acidification is higher in UAF reactor (31%) compared to UASB reactor (18%) at 2 h hydraulic retention time (HRT) in the anaerobic treatment of domestic wastewaters. T...
